Weird relay

Decided to wire in a relay for the heated grips im gonna fit soon. I wired the relay wire to my rear light cos i always ride with lights on anyway got it all connected and tested it with a accessory socket and nothing first thought was the relay was shagged so i connected the relay wire to the battery and heard a loud click and the socket was working then I re-connected the relay wire back to the rear light and alls well now I ask you why why do these things bugger me about.
