Corned Beef - 1 tin - £1.30
New Potatoes - 1 tin - 26p
Beans - 1 tin - 29p

1. Open tins
2. Empty into pan
3. Mash or cut up a bit
4. Heat for 2-3 mins

Done

This will feed 2 adults and 2 kids for a lunch, or a lunch and dinner for the man about town.

Any other ridiculous cheap dinners? They have to be quick, not delicious.

The original poster, seems to be taking more pride in the lack of skill necessary, than either the quality of the food or the cheapness.

I'm quite happy to eat baked beans and corned beef out of the can with a spoon, which for me wins on that score, but its still a bit extravagant and pricey.

If you cook stuff from scratch, it can be far cheaper, far tastier, doesnt need much work, but maybe a little forward planning.

I'm a great believer, in making a batch of something, and eating up portions when needed.

So for me, the original posters recipe, would be far better, if it was a £1 pack of mince, and real new potatoes that have been washed by the supermarket for convenience, and some carrots.

Canned food is for eating out of cans, not cooking with.

Something often overlooked for proper cooking, is the microwave.

Often seen as just for warming things up, its actually ace at cooking things quickly and keeping the flavour.

For example whole vegetables put in the microwave, act like little pressure cookers, keeping flavour in.

Try this

4 carrots on a plate in a puddle of water, another plate on top

Microwave until they are soft. They come out like roasted vegetables without the fat. Sweet, soft and delicious. I admit its a while since I've done them, so I cant remember how long.

Unpeeled onions in a pig pirex bowl with a plate on top, come out like roast onions but without the fat. You cook them until they are soft, then you have to wait for them to cool a bit, to peel them but they are then delicious with balsamic vinegar on them.

This thread makes proper food lovers sad.
Either get a cheap nasty ready meal, or go the whole hog and cook something big, tasty, fatty and satisfying.

I dunno, corned beef, potatos and beans is very satisfying for me, though I don't usually use new potato or cook it all together.

I make proper mash, cook the beans, and then have the corned beef cold...may have to try mr Shand's method though, sounds tasty.

Camping is what it was invented for! Just remember to drain the peas and spuds or your meat will be watery and salty!

Another good one is,

1x can of pilchards
1x can of beans
2x Slices Brown bread
Grated cheese

Mix, heat and serve on brown bread toast with grated cheese on top.

Cook mince.
Cook pasta.
Lob together in an oven dish.
Chuck in jar or two of cheese sauce.
Layer shitloads of cheap cheese on the top.
Oven.
Finish off under the grill to get the cheese all crispy.

Reheat in microwave for the next 3 days. Nom.

Camping is the only time I've ever eaten corned beef! Embarassed

Mum used to make us corned beef hash using tinned corned beef, a packet of smash potato and an onion! Mix up potato, fry up with corned beef and onions, add loads of tomato ketchup - om nom nom!! It was the only time we ever ate 'instant' food and twas very exciting!! Rolling Eyes

Another one as a student was a tin of tuna and one of those 'rice with stuff added' packets all thrown into a pan together = tuna mush and surprisingly good. Laughing

For this recipe, you will require a kettle.

Microwave tuna steak in pouch. Sachet of cous-cous with dried vegetables in (ainsley harriot ones are cheap and tasty).

Put tuna steak in kettle (in pouch). Bring to the boil.

Pour hot water onto cous-cous. Wait two minutes, add contents of sachet.

You can cook a lot of the pouched meals in a kettle. Handy if you're staying at a B&B or backpacking.

Or one of my favourites when I was cooking for four of us in our student digs.

Jumbo pack of turkey pieces. Three bell peppers. Fry the turkey, add the peppers (sliced) and fry until going soft. Bung in a can of mushroom flavour condensed soup, bring to the boil, black pepper to taste and serve on 2-minute egg noodles.

In the door to on the plate in under 15 minutes.

Or how about, frozen sausages and potato waffles. Can of beans in a pyrex bowl. Put the whole lot in the oven, set your alarm for 20 minutes. Surf the net while cooking.

Pasta
Egg
Grated Cheese.

Boil pasta, Drain and quickly break egg into pasta, stir hard so egg scrambles and is cooked by hot pasta. Add grated cheese and stir again so cheese melts.

Eat, with some chilli sauce if you want to be posh.

I love cooking from scratch, however I find it more expensive to do so.

Just recently got back into cooking and I was finding I was spending at least £15 for one day of homemade dinner.

I normally go to Iceland and buy stuff for £15 which would last 3 days or so.

You can cook from scratch cheaply. The trick is just to use cheap ingredients, rather than ones suggested by celebrity chefs.

English vegetables are cheap, as is beef mince and chicken.

Sainsbury's Basics Chilli con carne, 89p
2 large baking potatoes, 30p

Nuke the spuds, nuke the chilli, pour latter over former.
