Window problem - Any window people on here??

Hi all.

We have a window which is stuck on vent, and now theres a draft coming in and making the place cold as fuck.

Iv had a good look and from what I gather, one of the sliding bolts isnt sliding out to allow the window to close. Any ideas on what I can do, or is it going to be a costly call out ?

I have had the same a couple of times. Both with the bolts not moving. Once with window shut and not opening and once with open and not closing.

Is the handle moving freely but the bolt remains still? Probably snapped inside. Undo the screws going down the length of the window and remove it.

Handle not moving? Undo the screws again and oil / take a look at the small ratchet inside to see if stuck or moved out of alignment.


With hindsight, I kinda remember my double glazing peeps saying to oil the mechanisms once a year.

I will have a look again tomorrow. Thing is, its stuck on vent so I cant get the window to move on one side.

I have taken the handle off and its fine, it moving the bolt on the other side just fine.

Its the bolt on the right hand side which is stuck. Cant see any other screws to get at, only thing I can think of it take the glass out of the top section and see if I can get at the bolt that way...cheers for the reply

Oh, that sucks. I had that too. I ended up drilling a 10mm hole through the UPVC where I thought the bolt enters the frame and forced it back with a screwdriver. I then mastic'd the hole over.

Last resort stuff obviously. I then removed that half of the mechanism.
