Thanks Colin, very interesting and of course the same principle. It is neither the water or the rope that cuts but the grit ithey pick up.

I suspect that handrail is actually cast iron - much softer than steel to cut.
Wal is correct about the waterjet cutting the work is done by garnet suspended in the water - the water is just a carrier medium.
I do a lot of wire sawing to cut concrete. The kit we use is a very high strength carrier cable on which are fixed steel round beads coated in industrial diamonds. Very effective at cutting almost anything. Very early versions of this were done by rope which had grit bonded to it by glue. Here's some stuff I've cut: ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

That is a common misconception.
As geri said, 'waterjets' used to cut steel are infact abrasive jets. The water is used as a coolant agent and to carry the 'grit', or the abrasive which is used.
Waterjets (where just water is used, not abrasive) are used generally where contamination could affect things, such as the food industry. They also cut things like plastic, wood, very sold metals and stuff like that. ____________________ It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, then it's bloody hilarious!!! |

And concrete.
Water alone cannot cut through metals like steel in any reasonable timeframe. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

The thickest material I cut regularly "water only", i.e. without abrasive is 10mm rubber. For sure you can cut thicker stuff (and certianly thin gauge alloys) without garnet but the finish tends to be crap (cut edge is tapered to fuck). The thickest material we've done at work was 70mm stainless....from memory the jet took about 2 minutes to pierce the workpiece ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free
