I remembered to drop the inside shoulder thru corners today and what a difference it makes!!

Before I was trying to countersteer with "high" shoulders and it just wasn't working...

But now with a dropped shoulder I can push "through" the bar and I turn in much much better!

Anyone else find it makes a lot of difference?

Really, I don't see how countersteering needs balls, its just the way you steer a bike over about 10 mph...

Try it next time your out.... at about 30 mph just drop the inside shoulder and push forward in the direction you want to turn.

IE if its a left hand bend push gently on the left clip-on and you will go left simples! You can accelerate the turn by pulling with the off hand as you push with the inside hand.....

yeah i've seen a few guys do it at like 50-60 and been flicked off there bikes and it looks bloody sore as well, i know you auto counter after like 9-11mph but to twist the handle bars and make the wheel go the other way scares me

But this what you are doing anyway? All you have to do to practise it deliberately is give your bar the TINIEST of pushes. I'm talking centimetres here. Then you'll feel massive effect of the bike starting to lean. Once the bike has lent you can point the wheel in the direction of the corner as you're supposed to. Honestly, you can still do this to turn your bike just a 1 degree change in direction.

I INSIST that you practice this the next time you find yourself going 15MPH ~ it will change your biking experience forever.

Dropping shoulders, keeping your elbows bent, is a cool way to keep your concentration up during a corner. If your arms are out rigid, you can't really feel what the front wheel is telling you about the surface, and how much grip you have or have not.

Then stop riding bikes... how do you think you get round corners? take your left hand off the bar and try and get round a corner, you can feel the amount of push/pull you need with your right arm. To go left you push the left grip, simple as that.

To be honest I think Blindweezy is thinking about getting the back wheel out super moto stylie. If he is I agree with his sentiments. As for all the rest I find relaxing and just riding the best way.

The term counter steering in bike parlance is not usually referring to controlling oversteer as in cars (though would have to cover that too) but instead the process of turning the front wheel away from the corner slightly to make the bike lean in the opposite direction.

You already do it to some extent Blindweezy, you just don't realise it. It's really the only way to make the bike lean but being conscious of it allows you to be more deliberate and flick the bike much more quickly or find extra lean if you're understeering off the road..

Agree, my Dad insists that countersteering is not real. He just "leans" the bike and doesn't see how that actually is countersteering....

Which is impossible, a fixed front wheel would not allow you to lean round a corner. You counter-steer, it's the only way physically possible.

If you want to prove it to him get him to try to lean the bike without his hands on the bars. You can just about get it to crank over but it ain't easy.

yeh and only as the wheel counter steers itself. as mentioned above. a fixed wheel = no turning no matter how much you lean over

Agreed, a spinning disk (the wheels) acts as a gyro, making it impossible for them to lean with the weight of a human.

They even use this concept to replace stabilisers on kiddies bikes now:

Cornering...The way I do it...

Drop the shoulder nearest the corner, keep your head up and ' point ' into the corner with your chin whilst looking into both the exit of the corner and the way the hedges/fences/trees lie to give you an indication of the exit of the corner, I also point my knee out the side I'm cornering aswell...

The chin and knee pointing just help me focus tbh... Thumbs Up

Was taught to do that during DAS. Do it as second nature now.

Reading about this makes me wonder if I do it enough unconsciously or not. No problems going around corners, just consciously doing it feels odd.

The way I understand it for a sample left turn(from this and Wikipedia):

-in order to get the lean, you countersteer (so push the left bar).
-but once leaned, you are then steering into the bend as you'd expect to (pushing the right bar).
-to lean even more, you push the left bar again!
-then countersteer to straighten up.

It's like walking, I suppose, you do it every day, you've been doing it for years no problem, but the theory hurts your head!

Understanding this and how it works can dramatically improve your confidence on the road.

Even if riding at normal speeds it will allow you to be much more confident in cornering which in turn should help improve your riding.

I still cannot understand why I wasn't taught this during standard bike training, lots of other people I've spoken to have said the same as well. I know it could be complex to a beginner but the value of it is immense and its easy to demonstrate.

I've been called a liar before by a barstool hero who said it's simply impossible and you cant turn a bike left by pushing the leftside bar pushing the wheel right. I was always told not to argue with an idiot though because they'll bring you down to their level and win on experience.

If you dont understand it, ride in a straight line at 20-30mph on a nice straight road. very GENTLY push the left bar away from you. You'll slowly tip left, push the right bar away from you to come back to centre.

The bar will naturally resist you a little anyway, and by gently i mean pushing it what will only feel like a few mm away.

I got told about this by someone whod been riding for years after about 6-9 months of riding, it changed a hell of a lot and improved confidence.

As has been said above, it's worth trying and should be tried.

I remember when I first rode a bigger bike. My mate's CBR600 when I had only ridden 125's and my 250 commuter.

I couldn't get it 'round corners and almost crashed it because I'd never heard of counter-steering and didn;'t need to do it on my 250.

My mate showed me how to do it and it makes sense when you try it.

Not sure why people find it so difficult to understand that above 15mph you ALWAYS do it, no matter what bike. I went from a YBR125 to an R1 and still had no issues getting it leant over in corners, as this thread has proved, without counter steer you will never get a bike around a corner.
