There's nothing like the feeling you get after a good work out, feels great.
Very hard to stay on the diet & keep to your training tho, that's why i'm on a break. |

ah so you`ve got the beginners bug have you.Once you realise how much work`s involved, how expensive it is, and how much dedication it takes you`ll probably stop and start smoking again like so many others do .
If you`re still training in 3 months time i`ll be surprised...but i`ll give you a pat on the back if you still are
I`ve been doing it for 20 years now on and off so if you need any advice with anything i`d be happy to help.
Here`s a few sites you might want to join if youre looking for like minded individuals and chat.

muscletalk.co.uk (lots of silly kids on this site though and its moderated by heavy handed fucktards) |

I'm guessing you know your stuff so i have a question. When at work how do you manage your diet as my routine consists of about 6 meals as day. Mainly tuna/chicken & rice in the day time
Oh & Harold_Shand, beware of the squats. They absolutely kill me. |

What supplements and shakes are good for n00bies?
I've always pounded the weights but never really looked after the diet side of things. Hopefully a few changes in habits will get the bitch tits back to pecs before too long.

It`s hard!!!
If you work long hours in a job where eating on duty isnt possible you can make use of protein shakes, carb drinks, and various other supplements.
I work a 40 hour week with 8 hour shifts so its manageable for me.I have a shake when i get up and a solid breakfast 1 hour later.
My mid morning meal is a packed lunch from home eaten when my colleagues go for their smoke break.
Lunch i get from the staff canteen but if i dont like the menu theyve got on that week i bring something substantial from home.
My mid afternoon meal is another shake using protein powder and porridge oats and that covers me until i get home.
After that i have my pre and post workout nutrition,a light protein supper, and my bedtime meal.
Dont be too anal about the diet unless youre at an advanced level already.Missing the odd meal here and there wont hurt so long as you dont make a habit of it.Just make sure your other meals provide the overall macronutrient quota that your body needs for each day.
For beginners,if you can aim for 3 solid meals each day (breakfast, lunch, early evening) all you need on top of that is 2 protein shakes or weight gainers while you`re at work.
Knocking a protein shake down only takes a minute so you wont get in trouble with your boss.
My manager`s a reasonable chap and knows how important my diet is to me,so he cuts me slack and allows me to eat in my office.

Take some photos of how you look now and stash them away, then review them in about 6 months time (providing you stick with it).
It's good motivation to see how much you have progressed, as it is sometimes hard to see it yourself. I was training 2 years and had people commenting how much size I'd put on, but I could never see it myself so thought they were being overly generous with the complements or just taking the mick a bit, being a gym head an all.
Wasn't till I saw a few old photos that I realised how much I'd changed over a relatively small amount of time.
I'd also just concentrate on putting on size at the moment as opposed to trying to manage a diet plan and train accordingly at the same time, it's a lot to take on and as a beginner it will get on your nerves and you may well end up saying "aaaah fuck it, wheres me tabs?"
Just eat as normal throwing a few protein shakes in there every day, after you;ve been training say 2-3 months you might wanna throw a weight gain supplement in there, then after 6+ months see if you're happy with your size (lol although you're never 100% happy no matter how well you do) then focus on cutting up as you will confident enough about your training for it to not tax your mind anymore, meaning you can concentrate fully on gettin a good diet sorted.

10am 4x weetabix, 8oz semi skimmed milk, Morning formula
12pm Tuna, salad, olive oil, baby potatos
2pm 100g chicken breast, rice, veg, salad, olive oil, cashews
4pm PWO - Whey, 100g fine oats
5pm Train
7pm PWO - Whey, banana, fine oats
8pm 200g Rump Steak, bolognese sauce, steamed mixed veg, Pasta, olive oil, new potato's
10pm Bedtime extreme
This has by far been the hardest part for me, spent ages trying to get it right & it's still lacking some things. What do'ya reckon?

Well, I'm by no means an expert, but I'd say you are pretty much on the money there, except me personally would have porridge oats in the morning mixed with whey and a tablespoon of honey. The slow burning carbs will have it so that it will come 1pm before you even think about food again it fills you up and lasts that long. Of course, you shouldn't wait until you are hungry before you eat, I'm merely saying how good it is.
You'd have that for breakfast then follow your timetable as listed above. I like that you have variety of meat sources, but don't forget our good friend the Turkey, as I often see good deals on turkey meat and it's full of goodness, maybe mix up the fish sources as well, and subsitute half of your olive oil intake with flax seed - no real reason why, just I like to know I'm covering all bases by being as varied as I can.
Theres a school of thought that states you would follow this plan for 6 days, and on the sunday eat like a god damn horse (whether this is lots of sensible food or whether you totally slob out is your prerogative). The theory is that this stops the body developing a sort of homeostasis given the routine calorie intake, and therefore stops the metabolism slowing down. This way, any stagnations can be controlled by upping carbs, or stepping up the cardio.

Good advice there.
Weetabix (whilst not being a bad choice) has a high GI rating so it absorbs quickly, gets used quickly, and leaves you hungry again soon after.
Oats are the opposite and the honey acts as a quick spike for your energy levels so you get the best of both worlds.

Good advice again
Cheat days (or reloads as i call them) are invaluable tools of the trade.
Not only do they do what you`ve already said...they also overcome the biggest obstacle for a bodybuilder..and that`s eating enough food.
If any beginner tries to eat just plain boiled chicken, steamed veg, tuna, egg whites, etc etc 24/7 they`ll not last long.
Diets THAT strict should only be used for pre-competition prep or for dropping bodyfat fast.
The reason most people fail so early on is mainly due to following one of these diets and thinking it`s what they`re supposed to be doing
A varied diet will keep you going a hell of a lot longer. (just take it easy on the saturated fats!!!) |

I did that for several weeks, just ate plain food, no extra salt, no sauce just to add flavour, just plain ass chicken with rice or pasta (wholemeal I might add!) with broccoli and other assorted non-exciting vegetables.
Make no mistake, I burnt fat like a bastard, within a week and a half my jeans were already sliding down my arse so I looked like a right ruuuuuude boiiiiiiii. This however, did not make the eating experience anymore pleasurable. It was horrible and I dreaded the next meal as I virtually had to force it down me (this is also owing to the fact that once you get into this type of routine, you are eating again when you are absolutely not hungry at all, which is surprisingly diffucult).
It all ended when I must not have cooked a chicken properly or something, because I was sick as a mutt for a couple of days and I was shitting all sorts - I could've taken the contents of the pan and sold it as Bisto. Strangely, this left me with a repulsion to most vegetables thereafter, I still can't go anywhere near broccoli for the most part.
I think its more sensible and maintainable to throw in a few extras just to keep it so that you enjoy what you are eating and it doesn't become a chore, because whilst that might slow down progress a little, it's better than fucking the whole thing off because it's too much effort/ a miserable experience.

Wow.
The first bodybuilding related post on here I agree with. (and LOL at muscletalk thing. Has some good info on though)
I started training at about 17, sorted my diet when i was 18 and stuck at it for about 18 months. I moved away though and lived in hotels for a year so lost quite a lot of size.
I'm just getting back into it and i've forgotten how hard the diet bit is. I'm what people call a hardgainer, i can eat 5000cals all day and not put fat on, just shit lots and have a bloated stomach. I have to force-feed myself to put size on.
There was a good saying "muscles are made in the kitchen, not in the gym" a bit soft but true. |

After working in the US for a stint where my daily diet consisted of a Macbreakfast, pot noodles & coke for lunch, 6-8 bottles of beer after work followed by Macdonalds I went from 62 to 72 kgs in about 8 months
Anyway, knocked most carbs from my diet ie no rice, pasta, potatoes, just ate protein and went on a training regime of pull-ups, chin-ups, press-ups, sit-ups, and dips, no weights except a couple of dumb-bell reps .
Back to 63 kgs although got a bit lazy last few months but back trying to build up my usual reps.....you lose your strength pretty fast if you don't keep it up .. |
