Today I have spent most of the afternoon chugging around the local lanes (and to Boxhill) on this abomination.
Not sure of exactly what it is - it came free with a 1970's green goddess ... but I do know the following:

1) it has very basic brakes and you need to plan at least 100 yds in advance.
2) when shutting off the throttle at any speed, it develops a 'death wobble' that you cannot grip .. you just have to let it do its thing (see video at end of this post - and no i am not making it do it)
3) when you go around a right hand corner, the sidecar lifts very easily. We ended up weighing it down with a spare battery and a fire extinguiser.
4) it gives more smiles per mile than any bike I have ridden recently ... Great Fun Smile

Adding the 'weight' ... note the wooden block 'handbrake' (also stored in the sidecar, and an indication of how shite the brakes are) and the Green Goddess that the bike came with:

Setting off .. well! trying to find first gear:

Video of the 'death wobble':

That bike looks amazing!

What do you think is causing it to do the death wobble thing?

I 'suspect' (ie: KNOW Rolling Eyes ) its a combination of:
a) Front fork that sticks and has virtualy zero damping ... and
b) All the wheel bearings have a huge amount of play (the replacements arrived this morning and will be fitted next week)

My mate bought one.
He is one of those lovable ecentrics that gets away with doing things 'differently' (ie: "oh thats just Steve").
BUT, there is reasoning behind his madness.

He has quite a lot of land and has recently made a paddock area that need watering.
He looked into an irrigation system and it was going to cost about £10,000 (?) .... so instead he bought this Green Goddess and using the auxilary pump he can fire water right across and over his paddock Smile

Are they normal ball bearings or are they possibly tapered rollers?

All the best

That looks very much like a WW2 German Zundapp or BMW combo. All it needs is an MG34 or 42 mounted on it.

I sold a 1968 Soviet DNEPR side-car outfit last month for £800, was a complete wreak and would never run again but the side cars fit quite easily on other bikes so are worth alot.

One of the best l,ve seen.

OMG where do I get one of these. I've been trying to get our lass into biking and I think this may do it. If that fails I'll just ride around with my dog in the sidecar.

When were you at Boxhill? I was there for a while today on the way to Brightona, at about 12-1pm. Can't say I saw you as I think I probably would have remembered. Laughing

the old death wobble eh? I know it well

obviously the wheel bearings won't help if they're knackered but if that doesn't fix it pump all your tires up to 35psi or above

my enfield outfit was almost un ridable when I got it as the tires were at 24/26 as per recommendations, so I pumped them all up to 35 & it never wobbled again

don't ask me why that would make a difference, I was told to do it by my brother who has ridden outfits for more than 20 years so I bowed to experience & it worked

[anorack] It's a Dnepr M72, 750cc sidevalve horizontally opposed twin. In totally unmolested, original condition. Complete with the glorious powder blue paint of the revolution... Comrade silky666. [/anorack]

The death wobble is a feature of most outfits I've seen unless fitted with either hub-centre steering or a leading link front end, square section tyres and a huge steering damper.

It's because all of the wheels point in different directions to make it go in a straight line. On deceleration, the sidecar tries to drive itself round the outside of the bike making the whole lot (in this case, RHS sidecar) turn left. To counter this the sidecar wheel is toed-in, it points towards the front wheel. This created sideways flex in the forks and a death wobble.

Adjusting the toe-in angle mm perfect lessens the effect but a big steering damper is usually a good plan.

If you look closely, there is probably a secondary gear change handle in the sidecar so you can scare the shit out of the rider while on the move. There may even be mounting points for a machine gun.

Already planning next weekend.
Its will either be a trip to Boxhill ... scary enough on its own hammering down the dual carriageway .... or, we have a plan to visit the off road bits at the bottom of my lane.
Whatever happens, I will of course have my camera/vidcam ready.

(Hetzer, you dont happen to have a spare front mounted machine gun going spare do ya ?) Smile

A big bag of sand in the sidecar is traditional. Keeps the weight low, doesn't move about and any passengers can rest their feet on it.

If it's icey, can be handy for getting traction for going up steep hills.

Probably not that exact one, but there are more moder versions with a left hand sidecar and I think the Chinese make a direct copy of it too.

Not now, but they were before a certain (fairly recent) date. They were importing Urals with powered sidecars up until a few years ago and they only make those with a RH chair.

In a similar way, you must now have a brake on the sidecar wheel but many older ones don't have them

Actually, I suspect it was just a case of there were no rules regarding them and now there are.

Construction and use regulations are not generally retrospective with one exception I know of, seatbelts. So if it was legal when it was new/imported, it's still legal.
