hi folksm sumone has offerd me a fz 750 genesis. its al,ost a complete bike but theres no spark, but is a goood price, now i was wondering whether to take the old girl on and get here fixed up because she looks like she wud make a pretty good sports tourer. im just wondering whether these bikes have any weakneses i should be aware of. ive done a bit of homework and heard the cam chains are realy good on these bikes and theyve got 5 valves per cylinder instead of the conventional four. any advise would be great, cheers

hi

i had one of them in 1986 and it was fabulous then and there a very quick bike and it handled great too.

the one you have now is going to need all the usual stuff checking and or replacing
shock
head race
swing arm bearings linkages etc

fork service and a through engine service.

dont go sticking a huge rear tyre on it stick with the 150 Thumbs Up

the valves dont need checking till 28k so there pretty dam good and that engine is as smooth as any bike ive had Thumbs Up

got any pics Smile

Hi

I have one floating around.

They are good solid bikes. As mentioned above the valves very rarely need touching. 28k is the interval, but a good chance that they will mostly be fine at that time.

Only real weak point of the engine is the bearing behind the front sprocket. Generally fine but can fail if the chain is over tightened.

Build quality is not bad. Top speed is just under 150mph. No real step in the power delivery (just don't use a Micron exhaust on one, unless you like a big flat spot between 3k and 4k), just smooth power the whole way through. Seat is, err, something rejected by the Spanish Inquisition as being too cruel. Brakes are not that good (seize up easily). The electric reserve switch system is great. Fuel gauge is more accurate than those fitted to most bikes.

Note that there are lots of differences between the original 1FN models and the later ones. Different ignition system (coils, cdi units, etc, not interchangeable). Rear suspension linkage is very different.

All the best

Keith
