Today I did do, a big bike

Riding a big bike for the first time!!!!!!!! And I can certainly say that I need to replace that pair of jeans now and will be sticking to my 125 for the time being.

So I was at my friends fairly large farm yard today and I see his '08 transalp sitting in the corner like normal. I joking ask him if I can take if for a spin and to my surprise he said.... yeah ok then

So I start her up.... and just the noise.... the sound of her twin engine is so beautiful in comparison to my CG. So I take the first couple of minutes just getting acquainted with the weight of the bike, the clutch at low revs and doing some U turns. So far so good... it's a bike and all the same principles apply and so I'm pleasantly enjoying controlling the beast at 15MPH. My mechanic friend at this point sees the big smile on my face as I'm coping with taming the clutch as I should be and says.... go on, take her up the lane and back. Now, being a government road and all I am well aware that a quick trip up this lane and back was illegal for me, but boy am I glad I did.

I turn in to the road sitting on the bike in the same way I would on my CG (big mistake as it turns out) and immediately give it almost full throttle. I'm sure many of you on here are very used to what that kind of acceleration is like, but going from an 11HP bike to a 59HP bike it was a bit of a shock. In that second the sun stopped in the sky, my hearing went silent and my eyes went strange. And then reality came crashing back, adrenaline poured in to my veins and to be honest if you could have seen my face I don't think I've ever been more terrified.

Actually, I wasn't really holding on and quickly found my body thrown way back, my arms hanging on to the handle bars for dear life. I ease up on the acceleration and go in to 2nd. On a CG 2nd has less torque for accelerating than 1st.... if only I had thought this through. I give it full throttle again out of habbit and the bike just tears up the road going even faster than before.

I metaphorically soil myself... I'd just never in my life felt that kind of acceleration before, and never in a car. I panic and slam on the ABS brakes only to find an unexpected biblical amount of stopping power there and to make it worse I'm not used to the back brake position and haven't given it enough. I come to a very undignified stop and a jolt backwards somewhere just before colliding in to the A21. A bit shaken up I attempt to turn the bike around and head back.....

The second and final time I gave it full throttle in 1st on the way back I think I fell in love damn it, now I have to get my licence. Until then, my life will not be complete.

yeah its an amazing feeling to from a 125 to like a 1000's just so much power i had the chance to jump on the back of an r1 and i had never been faster than like 110-120 before but he took it about 180 which was so scary hanging on for dear life

After my first lesson on a CB5 I got back on my NSR125 and hated it.

My first ride on a 'big bike' was a 600 Divvy. Its something Il never forget! Awesome feeling, almost equalled by my first ride on a sports 600, but not quite.

I remember when I took my Monster out for the first time, I got so scared I came back within 10 minutes. In fact I even made a thread on here After that I was itching to get back on and went for a long ride the next day!

Went from RS125, went to testride
Fzr600R, around 90-95bhp, i nearly laid a shit right there in my pants, i only opened it up slightly in 2nd and my eyes were watering, now i look back at that i think it was strange must of been adrenaline as visor was down..

I can picture the look on your face. When my dad bought his SV650 he was moving up from a 125. I was also on my 125 at that point. We went onto a dual carriage way and he was doing 65, I thought screw that and went to overtake him. As I went past him I looked over my shoulder at him. He decided to crack the throttle wide open at that point and I will never forget that look in his eyes as his bike came to life and rocketed past me again. I experienced it about 20 minutes later when I had a go.

How long till you move up from the 125 then?

My first big bike experience was on a Transalp (although the older model) on a road when I shouldn't have been (in Morocco). It felt mental, I loved it. And soon after bought my own bigger bike (I had already past my test, was just saving for a bigger bike, but it encouraged me).

Yes, but a zx12r is something quite different.

Its addictive and should be illegal in most countries, I love mine. Its scary how quickly and easily you can get up speed on it,

Moving from the Gilera SC125 to the YZF600R is lovely, the power available is just astounding, power wheelies in second is fantastic.

Just like you said, it takes some getting used to but within a day I was riding like I was riding my 125 before, big bikes! .

Nice one Alexio. First time on a big one was on my DAS, after struggling around on a rubbish Lifan LF-125, got given an ER-5. Yes, weightier and more power, but it was only when we got onto an NSL road and my instructor ordered me 'come on then, let's go, 60mph' that I gave it a proper handful and

I jumped on an R1 from a 125 for a month, absolutely insane power, 1st gear up to 100mph is mental to do, but i'd never dream of full throttling it.. i honestly can't imagine what convinced you to do that on a big bike, then do it several more times, you'll be kissing the ground with your arse doing that.

having just got myfirst big bike this weekend, (zx7r) i can say quite honsetly, that the first time i went above 7k i shat myself.

reason i bought the zx7 was because it was a big framed sportsbike. but iv also found it to be learner friendly as the power is quite progresssive under 7-8k rpm.

The first time I had a go on a GS500 at DAS it felt heavy and quitey quick off the mark (although on the move my old tuned Octavia vRS felt quicker), when I passed my DAS and about 6 weeks later had a go on a Fireblade it felt f'in mental and I couldn't do it any justice , I've not ridden such a fast bike since, but I'd like to give it a go.

I kind of missed out on this, going 125, 400, 600, 900, 1000. Although when I got back from my lessons on the CB500s, riding the NC30 felt like I was holding onto the front spindle It was also so much better handling and quicker that I loved every second of it.

My first ride on a big bike was my mates ZZR500 in an enclosed private car park, was like piloting a small ocean going yacht, doing a U turn was like driving around the moon.


Then I tried my mates VFR400 again in a private car park, that was more fun. Made more fun as, as far as my mate was concerned I had no clue how to ride a bike.

He got a new key cut, put it in the ignition, then I pretended to look like an idiot trying to figure out how to start it, wait for him to press the button and start, sat the bike level, slyly moved the stand up and pointed out how nice the wieght was. I slowly brought my left foot up, put it in gear, whilst still staring at my mate, talking to him, start to bring the revs up.

His face was priceless coupled with the comment .."wha...wha...what are you doing"
"nothing" and just rode off around the car park lol

Then I learnt an important lesson, his VFR has no rear braking power what so ever, his front brake even when you look at it stops you head, so after working out the rear brake didnt work untill warm, I gently, litterally just tapped the front brake, which at 10mph if that catapaulted me forward, on the seat, which inturn, used my errrr junk to err crush my junk....

Slightly muffled cry of
"Man down....Medic! Seriously, put the kickstand down"

Was good fun though
