I done it a few months back, was pretty good fun although very tiring as we were doing mainly slow stuff, going up & down very steep hills etc.
Just wish we would of gone when it was raining as we were constantly trying to get the back end out & they wern't having it.
We used Artic Cats which i think were 400cc, not quick but had lots of grunt for the steep stuff.
I would of preferred some faster stuff tho, as it gets boring after a while. |

Yes, I've done it. FUCKING AWESOME. Quad safari at Ashcombe adventure centre in Devon. Was a stag party (mine!), about 18 of us in total. Kitted up in wet weather gear, had the safety briefing and were told that we'd go out one by one to be 'assessed' before getting out on the safari course.
Best man goes first, he likes bike and has loads of confidence. The test area is basically a 'square', couple hundred metres across. first three corners were slow, but indeed taken as corners. The last one however, was not. In front of a crowd of braying tools, the spamhead stuffed it into the tyrewall!
So next up, me. I worked out the idea pretty quickly and just nailed the throttle into corners and it turns pretty quick. Off throttle it slows quite quickly and you really don't need to use the brakes at all (they tell you to weave to slow down, rather than use the brakes).
So then, after all our assessment rides we scramble to the queue of awaiting quads, 450s up front (about half), the others being 250s. I was second in the group, being that I considered myself 'confident'. The slack jawed among us found ourselves at the front, the oestrogen-fuelled at the back.
Then, the most fun I've had, full stop.... About 2 hours of crashing over roots, rocks, through puddles, actively trying to destroy the quad. Got about a foot of air a few times. Went the wrong way at a junction once (little bit over optimistic and lacked commitment wrenching the thing around a treeroot). Every time we had to stop for everyone to catch up, the guy in front got a friendly James May- like bump in the backside and we all killed ourselves laughing when whoever it was started getting angry about it. The instructors told us not to use the horn on the quads too, which obviously didn't work. But good effort old bean!
In short, do it. I think we paid £45 each for the event and I'd go again in a heartbeat, it really was THAT much fun. |

Did half a day hooning around Fuerteventura a while back - brilliant fun but weird if you're used to two wheels. I had a couple of shocks when the quad didn't respond the way a bike does, hauling full force on the bars to turn corners is totally alien!
You'll try and put your feet down at least once while rolling to a standstill, I guarantee it... |

I once hired a quad one for half a day in the Philippines. The main roads on the island were mostly dirt tracks and the side roads were rock-strewn jungle tracks.
The steering is strange as you have to turn the bars firmly rather than lean and the lack of rear diff means the back skitters about on firm ground.
It was good fun hooning about and bouncing all over the place, wanging through the jungle and probably annoying the locals.
All-in-all though, motorbikes are better and more versatile.
I also had a go at the ATV Centre nr Redruth, which is a small MX track. Similar to above, the less up-for-it lads bimbled around, but I gave it as much as I could Getting a fair bit of air on the fastest jumps ____________________ TDM850

Ridden a lot of them on farms.
It's all about getting the back-end to break traction for teh powerslide.
Just to re-iterate. DO NOT PUT YOUR FEET DOWN. If you ride a motorbike, you will, so wear sturdy boots. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Hired a couple for a day at a time on the island of Santorini just to look around. Cheaper than a dune buggy and could strap more stuff to it than a moped so was perfect for seeing the whole island with the missus.

They are only acceptable on the offroad pissabout/stag-do type events in the UK though.
Great fun on poorly kept foreign roads. ____________________ Current Bikes: Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 (2020)

Meh, done it in Dubai up and around a dune called Big Red, hired out a Raptor 700R for the princely sum of 80 quid for 4 hours. It gets bastardly tiring after that. None of the places in UK seem to do sport racing quads, this was the beast that I rode.

First quad bike I ever rode was a Honda 650 twin (?transalp derived motor?). It had six gears, three gear ratios, selectable 2 and 4WD and a manual diff lock. It would do 60mph on the road and could tow a twin axle horse box.
Never seen one like it since, they seem to be getting smaller and slower if anything. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
