will cutting down to 1000 calories a day be stupid?
im not actually fat, ive just got a few pounds of puppy fat im trying to burn.
I usually eat 900 calories during the day, and probably about 1500-2000 when i get home from work Got an active job, and do a lil bit of exersize a day, i should be on about 2600 calories a day.
so will cutting down to 1000 calories and drinking shit loads of water be safe for a month or 2 till ive lost a few pounds? ____________________ follow my racing season

I was on 520 calories a day for 14 weeks, and went from 18st to 13st 4 lbs. 1000 calories a day would be a piece of piss, but it won't teach you healthy eating for the long term - it would just be a quick fix. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. 500 a day is pretty damn dangerous, you shouldn't drop below 1500 although 1300 would be okay for a short amount of time. Don't just drop it quick, eat say 3-500 less every week until you're down to 1500-ish.
If you just exercise for 30 mins a day doing interval training you will burn more than you eat and the puppy fat will dissapear within a month. ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

500 calories is ridiculous!
Read this if you really want to lose the weight, got it from torrents after stumbling on his site. Full of the actual science behind losing weight safely and keeping it off, well worth the read though it is very very long, and I'm not kidding. Also gives excellent diet planning advice, may be a good idea to take notes though as it is less concise and succinct than a colin1 special.
Happy dieting.
EDIT: BCF Won't let me upload it as the file is too big, which is the best site to upload a .rar or .pdf to share? That is indeed if theres any interest? |

I'm working on getting super-fit and slimmer than I currently am but I would have one word of warning, forget about weight if you're doing exercise in any decent amounts, clothes fit is what you should use as a measure.
My aim is not to be a certain weight, my aim is to be back in my old and very expensive suit by christmas. The jacket already fits but the trousers are nowhere near, so I'm cycling 30 miles a day to work and back (15 miles each way, not 60 miles) at least three times a week, preferably all 5 days if I don't have a meeting with a customer.
I weigh myself as a rough guide, as inches off the waist aren't always easy to see, but I am not a slave to the scales and I will never be.
As far as food goes, I'm still eating roughly what I want but I have upped the vegetables and fruit and cut down on the sweet stuff, that's it.
Cheers

Just also remembered, if you don't eat and starve yourself which eating 500 calories would be then you won't burn fat. The body goes into famine mode and will eat away at all your muscle, the metabolism won't be burning fat/calories. Therefore you won't lose the fat. ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

I'd forgotten that, I saw that on a program about super models who starve themselves.
One top tip for losing weight, that I read a while back and swear works well is to never eat anything for at least an hour after exercise. Whilst you are exercising, your body burns whatever energy source is available but this is often not body fat, it's what's available from food you have eaten. It's only once your body goes into recovery mode that it starts looking for body fat to burn, if you eat something then you give your body the energy source it was looking for, so it doesn't hunt for body fat.
I'm sure someone out there can give the proper explanation and I have read it somewhere on the net but I couldn't find it again.
Cheers

I never actually increased my exercise but I'm quite active anyway, I just cut the calories down to less than 1000 but would still have that maccy D, curry etc If I wanted it. |
Bloody hell, that's over 5 stone. Nice one. I reckon I'll lose somewhere in the region of about 2 stone before christmas, although getting in my suit is my real aim.
The only think that worries me is keeping my fitness there. The financial gains will be worth it, as I save £80 a month in fuel by cycling to work but 30 miles a day does drag and I'll have to be strong to make sure that I don't relapse and yo-yo.
Cheers

Hmmm, not sure about that, depends what kind of excercise and to what degree of effort is put in. If you have done anything decent then you will have burned off the available energy already, the body will enter catabolism, starting with muscle first since it releases energy more rapidly and efficiently than fat. This is why you will hear time and again to consume something within 20 minutes of finishing training - it means the body will recover using the consumed food rather than breaking down that muscle you just spent an hour and a half punishing.

You'd burn whatever gives a quick release of energy first, which is why energy drinks pep you up as it's a quick shot for the body to burn. Then after that it would go for muscle and finally body fat. It's why you should always have a mix of slow and fast releasing foods, as GhostRide has said in the bodybuilding thread.
I lost about 2.5 stone in 5 weeks back in April although some of that was muscle, i just cut out all starchy food like bread and rice. Stuck to salad mainly eaten with either tuna or chicken. It was bloody horrible, the food became tasteless and not being able to eat anything sweet was really hard. After a while you come to like it, and gradually learn of ways to eat food you like without it turning to fat.
I've lost 4 inches on my waist, and gone from size Large in tops to Small. I also feel a lot more lively and awake as a person as well as obviously feeling fitter, i even enjoy doing exercise now . ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

I'll take your word for that but there is so much contradictory info on the web (often contradicting itself) that it's difficult to know what is true and what is not.
I cycle 30 miles a day, usually 3-4 times a week in two stints of 15 miles, to work and back again. I'll drink water after (and during) cycling but I rarely feel like eating after exercise. Also, I am not doing this to build muscle, I'm doing it to lose weight and that, to me, is where the contradiction often comes in.
I can imagine that an exercise regime and diet, aimed primarily at bulking up and building muscle, is very different to that of someone who is trying to lose body fat. If someone is not even slightly bothered about muscle (at this stage anyway, once I'm slimmer I might then think about toning my upper body) does any of this advice differ?
Cheers

Yeah but you want to lose that weight in fat, not muscle. Losing muscle will slow down your basal metabolic rate, meaning less fat is burned off for energy in general. This in turn ends up making it harder for you to loose fat. Therefore, eating within 20 mins post training to maintain that muscle is the desirable thing to do.

Not that different really, total calories intaken would differ, ratios of proteins to carbs to fats would be tilted in favour of the desired effects, but the principles remain the same
People will argue till the cows come home as to whether its better to cut up then bulk up, or bulk up then cut up, only way to find out for yourself is to try both and see how you get on, rather than spend endless hours reading different forums etc only to come to the same conclusion anyway.

Problem is energy drinks are just sugar, which is fine in terms of simply boosting energy, but muscles need amino acids to recover and repair, thus the logic behind drinking a protein shake after workout, these usually contain mixed carbs and proteins - sometimes a blend of different proteins i.e egg white, casein, whey etc since they all metabolise at different speeds and therefore give a longer acting recovery shake.

Totally agree with you GhostRider, i personally only have water when i'm exercising. Eat something an hour before my workout then a whey protein shake straight after. I did try a few different energy drinks the other month for when i started running for more than 30 mins but they didn't make any difference tbh. ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N
