My first encounter with a fellow biker with double standards Evil or Very Mad

Well i was on my usual ride in to work this morning and a gold T reg honda burns past me as he usually does through goldborne, then just before the east lancs roundabout we hit the traffic que,my man on the 600 tries to get through the gap between a car and a small crossing point, the ones about 2 foot wide and gets stuck as the gaps too small, i however take a alternate route and safely i might add, any way off i go down the east lancs and stop at the lights to turn right to cultcheth, when along pops my man on the 600 and with his flip front up he gives me the traditional greeting of if you ride like that again i will phone the police as you are on "L" plates, i replied well hello to you and what the fuck are you on about, so he repeats his threat and i warmly tell him to write my plate number down and fuck right off.
Now this chap regular burns past me in a 30 zone at over 50 (dont ask how i would now) so hes either pissed that myself and another lad on "L"s take the coners quicker than him or maybe he was embarrased about his little jam this morning, but be warned the chap on the gold coloured T reg honda 600 in goldborne is a whining grassing two faced prick who cant ride Middle Finger apart from very fast in a straight line, at least i try in the corners, oh and he works in a garage in cultcheth. And if you happen to read this you have my number i assume and you know wjere i am each morning so kindly do as i asked and fuck off.

Rant over

Mark

What exactly did you do that he took such exception to? I can't see you doing anything wrong at all.

The guy sounds like a bit of a tosser, but just so you know, if you get spotted by a copper going to the right of a traffic island whe filtering you will get a fixed penalty notice, not sure if its endorsable though.

edit - a quick google suggests 3 points

I take it you went round the right side of a keep-left bollard then?

It's a non-endorsable offence, so carries no points. £30 fine, unless it's one of the offences that have just been bumped up to £60 - like seatbelts.

Would anyone else consider pulling this manoeuvre?

I wouldn't, just because it's daft coz it's dangerous, highly illegal, and disrespecting of the biker trying to squeeze through the gap. Rolling Eyes

However if for some bizarre reason I did pull this manoeuvre and the other biker caught up and started shouting stuff, I'd tell him to eff off and mind his own effing business! Thumbs Up Laughing

I've gone round a traffic island on the wrong side once or twice before, but only if there's nothing coming that'll get there at the same time as me: it's not that hard to judge the speed of a car moving at normal urban traffic speeds, so I feel pretty confident about it.
Not something that I'd attempt in front of the police, of course, but that goes without saying.

I have never done this Shocked but then, so far I've never had to. I've never been trapped on my side of the road at one of these because my bike just seems to be so small. If it was one of those crossing islands with the low curb I'd be tempted to go over the island cross country style though Laughing

I haven't done it for a while, but used to do it most days because a road on my route to work warranted it. Traffic is rammed going in one direction (towards the office) and theres nary a thing coming the other way.

I wouldn't do it in front of police right enough, but as long as your doing it safely...

Frankly, if there's a bike wedged somewhere between a car and an island; it's fair game, (it's a bit of a laugh.) It might not be an issue if drivers didn't deliberately position their cars to block a motorcyclist from making lawful progress. It's pretty rare, but you do get some bloody minded individuals, (who become far more reasonable when you're tapping on their window...)

Thumbs Up

It's not very dangerous to go past the bollard on the right as long as there aren't any cars coming the other way. It's not highly illegal, it's just going past a bollard on the right. It's disrespectful of the other biker to get pissed off about someone being faster at filtering.

So you would consider riding the wrong way up a dual carriageway if your side made it imposible to filter then..... Shocked

Because that is what you are doing in effect by passing that island on the right. Laughing

Never mind that some pedestrian might step out as they will only look one way, where the traffic is coming from.

Going the wrong way on a dual carriageway is somewhat more dangerous than going to the right of a single bollard. Laughing

I'd treat it as I would any overtake.

In fact if I understand rightly, I did it today in a car, passing a bus.

I would say, that everyone has different ideas of what is safe and unsafe, even if the law is fairly fixed.

Obviously gold bloke has a bit of a superiority thing, and his ideas of whats safe or not, may or may not be influenced by someone going quicker than him.

To him, going the wrong way, probably looks more dangerous than doing 50 in a 30. For all I know, he's right.

iooi has an interesting point about pedestrians assuming which way to look before crossing the road, but any time you do an overtake on a single carriageway road, you will go onto the other side of the road, where a pedestrian might not expect you to be.

We'd do it in a NSL, so why not in a 30 ?

I do it every day, pretty much. Why try and force your way through a tiny gap when you can use the empty half of the road?

It shouldn't be an issue to the other rider if you make sure you don't close in on top of them.

Yes, it's an offence, but it's less risky than trying to perform the same manoeuvre legally and, frankly, I'd rather take the risk of £30 fine then put myself in harm's way for no good reason.

Besides, the occasional bike copper on the route never seems too upset when I follow their lead around the island...
