Hello BCFers! Right I'm in a bit of a pickle.... I have had a N97 on the dreaded 3 network since July now and I'm just not happy. I had a N95 8GB for 18 months prior and the phone was pretty good when it worked (also had a pants battery life). It broke on 3 occasions and I have to give credit to 3 who dealt with everyone and replaced the phone free of charge even though I didn't have insurance, under manufacturer’s warranty (through Nokia of course). Now, I was planning to change to orange to get the N97 as I wasn't too impressed with 3's network coverage. They rang me an gave me a better deal than was available anywhere else and thought I'd stay - £39 per month, free phone, 700 mins or texts pm and unlimited internet. Now I know you'll all say that’s expensive but I got it the moment it came out and you couldn't get it cheaper anywhere else then.

Right, getting to the point, the phone is a piece of shit. As a long time hater of/ignorant to Apple it pains me to say it does not live up to the iPhone. Reading the spec sheet it should be very competent but it just isn't. I am only using 20GB of its 32GB for music yet when I select "all songs" it takes 40-80 seconds to open. Once open you can't skip songs at any pace as with any other sort of music playing device, you have to listen to the first 3 or 4 seconds of the track or it just freezes. The web browser works well for the first web address you type in, after that if you try typing another url the key pad is unresponsive and you have to close down the window, open it again, exit the application and then re-open the application. That along with a it just being generally slow to do anything else is really getting to me. A phone of this price should not be such a poor performer. It's slow processor coupled with it's stupid run more than one app at the same time is rubbish, if you click the red phone down button to go back to the main menu the app keeps running, slowing down the phone considerably, you have to click options then scroll down and click exit every time you're finished with an application (any, i.e. music player, call log, photos, web browser ect.).

Now I'm not sure whether this part is 3 or Nokia but quite often I
It loses signal mid call, it will go from a full 6 bars of signal to none without even moving the phone for no apparent reason, something the N95 never did.

Is there any way I can get out of this contract? The only phone I'd really want is the new LG chocolate as it looks pretty decent. I would change handsets and continue my contract with 3 if they offered the phone but currently they do not and they don't really offer any other smart phones.

I'm pretty sure I'm just gonna have to bend over for the next 15 months and take it but hey, here's to optimism.

Joe

I've heard there is a phone out in some shops at the moment that is far better than any of this shit. You just pick it up to turn it on and there's no lag whatsoever, dial and you're straight through every time (providing there's someone on the other end of course).
Can't remember what it's called but here's a pic...

Very Happy

The N97 is extremely buggy, have you updated it to the latest firmware yet? it makes things slightly better.

Download the Betalabs OVI suite and try to updae you should get version 1.2

https://betalabs.nokia.com/ovisuite

Then update the firmware on your phone, version 2.0 is supposed to be out soon, I'm not holding my breath it will be any better.

Beta labs is well worth browsing for new apps too.

I've had this phone for about a month now and am pissed off with it.

I have the most recent firmware on it but is still feels like it's running on a beta release. And thoe worse thing is I'm now tied into a contract with it for another 23 months!

Secretly hoping the V2 firmware sorts out the bugs, of which there are tons but got a horrible feeling that it won't. All the reviews of the new firmware are just harping on about the new Kenetic scrolling feature in menu's, woopty-fuckin-doo, a phone that's basic features work correctly mean a lot more to me than new ways of scrolling through menu's!

Rant over.
