iphone won't connect to internet

Hi guys,

Have a jailbroken 3G but it just won't connect to the net. It's fine on wifi but not 3G, i've tried resetting the network settings, i've added new settings (payandgo.o2.co.uk) & still nothing.

I get the 3G logo sometimes & it was working fine yesterday.

Be warned, the O2 data network is terrible and has been down for hours at a time before now.

Failing that do a full restore in iTunes.

Cheers Joe, hopefully that is the problem.

Bit of an update tho, i can connect to the net with 3G turned off & Edge turned on. Is this right?

Hi,

I dont think you can turn the 3G off. I have found when using 3G or Edge sometimes it thinks it loading but does nothing. Stopping the navigation and refresh often wakes it up.

And the 3G network is patchy and speed very variable.

Misc, If you've Jailbroken it, have you installed SBsettings from Cydia?

do you know how to get to the SBsettings menu where you can toggle 3g/edge etc. ?

You can definitely turn 3G off in your network settings. I'd also give it a day or so because I too have experienced the 3G network going down and taking a good 8-12 hours to come back again without me doing anything to the phone.

Still down, i've tried updating, restoring, different network settings & it still won't connect via 3G.

Been on the phone to o2 & they told me if it's not the sim card it's the phone, so transferred my sim details to my new sim which should be done any time now, fingers crossed it's the sim.

Errm , I wasn't aware that you could turn EDGE off, I always presumed that if a 3G connection wasnt available or was turned off then it would revert to EDGE.

How did you jailbreak it? Using RedSn0w? I don't know if it will make a difference at all, but I only found out yesterday that you can jailbreak an iPhone 3GS on firmware 3.1.2 using something called 'BlackRa1n' - look it up I think it jailbreaks everything, and maybe give that a go, from things I read, sometimes a jailbreak can not go 100% as planned and mess up a few things (such is the gamble one takes really), so maybe jailbreaking it a different way might bring back your internet access.

I haven't tried blackra1n myself yet, but will probably do so tonight.

You can turn it off/on in sbsettings from Cydia.

I've restored my phone to factory settings twice now so it should definitely of worked as the phone was completely stock, but still no 3G without EDGE switched on. If i turn EDGE off, 3G goes off.

As you say, i'm already running Blackra1n on 3.1.2 & it's still the same. Sad

May be you have to restore the phone and send it back then, might be less of a headache in the long run.

hmm i didnt want to try blackra1n, dev team didnt approve it fully.

they released pwagetool 3.1.4 yesterday to jailbreak the 3.1.2 firmware, i used that last night and im having no problems at all.

maybe try re-uploading with the custom firmware created by pwnage tool.

also Misc - answer these questions:

- are you on o2 (official iphone network)?

- what baseband firmware does your phone have now? can be found in Settings - General - About - Modem Firmware. having an older baseband firmwware may cause this.

I'm on 05.11.07 firmware.

had an iphone for over a year now.. NEVER had a prob with 3g unless i was actually beyond the hotspots

Seriously thinking of selling the iphone, bloody useless. I can't connect to 3G & i've literally tried everything possible including getting on the phone to the iphone experts.

I figured a way around the youtube app by just going to youtube in Safari, but the videos just buffer for ages & then play for about 5 seconds before buffering for another 20 seconds.

From what i can tell EDGE is just as useful as no internet.

Yup, been restored 3x now with all different firmware including the official one.

Been on the phone with o2 twice now & they said everything is fine at their end & that all my connections are good & so is the sim, so it has to be a dodgy phone. Sad

btw what websites you trying to load on the phone through 3G?

coz this forum, BCF, takes aaaaaages to load - even on mine and my laptop and computer at work.

other forums/sites work fine on my phone though.
