Warranty with product or person

Hi guys, only answer this if you are sure please as I don't want to ring Dixons up and end up losing the guarantee altogether!

Basically, I bough a Digital camera back in June from Dixons online, but it ended up as surplus to requirements so I sold in on eBay advertised as still having 11 months warranty. Sod's law that the buyer has just been in touch to tell me he is having a problem with it.

Sooo, does the guarantee transfer to the new buyer when I sold the camera, or is he going to have to return it to me to get in touch with Dixons? He has the receipt from when I bought it as well as the eBay receipt that shows he bought it from me but not sure if that makes a difference.

I'd have thought as long as he's got proof of purchase then the camera will be covered.

Plus, he doesn't have to say he bought it from you, it's still your camera. He's a mate dropping it in to be repaired cos you're busy at work, he's dropping it in to be repaired because it broke whilst he was using it so he's got to get it sorted, he's a mate dropping it in to be repaired because you're currently being held by the police for assault after some idiot in currys wrongfully wouldn't accept a warranty return, or any other plausible reason.

With the receipt he'll be fine.

Sounds good to me... only problem is that Dixons is online only so it'll have to be posted off so they might insist that it is returned to my address (if that's the line they take.)

My mate says he's sure it's the product that has the shop guarantee, not the purchaser - but he's an idiot so not sure I trust his opinion.

If he has the reciept then let him return it to a dixon shop to be delt with.
If they say it can only go back via the online store... Fine. You have moved

A warranty that is provided with the product and not in addition to it, is transferable to the new owner in all cases. So you should not have to deal with dixons. It has been sold on and therefore the new owner needs to speak to Dixons.

If you purchase an "extended" warranty then in many cases it's not transferable so you need to make sure you check the small print first

Thanks everyone - especially wisenerl. The rest of the ideas were good in theory, but I wouldn't expect an eBay purchaser to be happy to go into shops and pretend to be me.

It turns out that when I sent him the camera I put the wrong USB cable in the box and he has tried to cram that proprietary USB from another model into a standard mini-USB slot. No idea what damage that will have done and it's unlikely the store will honour a warranty on something that he has broken himself - hope he's not expecting me to sort it out!

Yeah, I was happy to apologise for putting the wrong cable in the box and was more than happy to send him the correct one at my expense when he pointed this out to me - but I can't see how I am responsible for someone forcing a cable into a socket where it obviously doesn't fit.
