I'm on the road all day (Work in IT as field engineer) and i'm able to claim for my lunch.
I eat out (McDonalds, KFC, Chippy etc) about twice a week and the rest is usually ready-made sandwich's and crisps.

I'm getting sick of bacon & egg sarnies and pretty much sick of fast food too. I've been putting on weight slowly since I started the job 1 year ago, Around 1st in that time.

Thought about making my own lunches but I can't really be bothered with that unless it's quick & simple to make, Any ideas?

What do the rest of you do for lunches when you're out and about all day?

When I was a field engineer I used to go to Greggs, it had the same effect you describe though, their sausage rolls are seriously grungey but are just awesome to eat.

I kept on but joined a gym.

If there was no bakers, I stuck with a healthy type sandwich from Tesco's (ham & ementhal cheese was my favourite.)

Trouble is, if you're sitting driving all day then it doesn't really matter what you have, it's going to stick to your bones. (Salads not-with-standing.)

Thumbs Up

Stay away from those places, I find it much more difficult because I drive a big ass truck and therefore can't really stop at shops or places to buy food most of the time, so it's motorway services or petrol stations if I don't get food before work. I do have McDonalds sometimes, usually when i'm painfully hungry, I don't have breakfast so often don't eat for 14/15hours since the previous day, but I only go to those places a handful of times a year.

As you're in a car/van then just stop at a supermarket and get some sandwiches or salad, Morrisons do the best salads IMO and they're not just a box of leaves, they do allsorts with meat, seafood etc. Oat and Nut type bars are good for snacks too rather than crisps.

If you start work early, get into Tesco express/metro as it opens and get the hot cheesey twist things fresh out of the oven, used to be a daily ritual of mine during the winter when I was working from 7am for breakfast.

It's just so much cheaper and easier to make your own sandwiches. I can't understand why someone would resist taking 10 minutes in the morning to prepare something. Bread, butter and filling - that's all that's needed. I like to keep my fridge stocked up with cheese, mayo, ham, cucumber, jam, branston pickle and have some tuna around Thumbs Up

It really is just 10 minutes out of your morning and you'll be very happy!

Best thing is to think of 2 or 3 simple sarnie fillings that you like, and alternate.

When you have the same thing on consecutive days is when you get pissed off with it.

Tuna is a good one, especially mixed with philly and sweetcorn. Really filling, dead easy - open two tins, tip into a tupperware box, add big glob of philly and mix.

Take this to work with your bread of choice, pitta, bap, baguette, wrap, slices - I always take filling seperately as I'm fussy about soggy bread when sarnies are ready made!

Some nice ham and a bagged salad is another - again chuck the filing in a tub and pack your bread.

One I had today was boiled egg sliced with mayo and chilli powder Drooling This does mean you need to boil an egg the night before though.

I also do some tandoori chicken some weeks - slash some chicken breast, coat in tandoori spice mixed with yoghurt (got my spice from an asian grocers), hot grill till it starts to blacken slightly then cool, slice and keep in fridge/freezer. Put a handful in tupperware with some mint yoghurt (I got a big squeezy bottle like they have in kebab shops for pence in the same asian grocers) and maybe salad/sliced onion, add a wrap or two, well nice.

Some take a little prep, but not a massive amount of time/money/effort and I always find a good homemade lunch way more satisfying than Maccy D's etc.

ps. I'd recommend some kind of small cool bag, especially in summer months! Shocked

I sometimes take a flask of soup with a crusty roll. I also have a wide necked flask and I've used that for chunky soup, stew sometimes, even a portion of chilli to put on pita bread. Drooling

intersperse this with bread and seperate filling as suggested earlier. Followed by a nice muller yoghurt or rice.

I always have a bag of dried bananas in the door pocket of the van.

Been on the road for the last 3.5 years. I generally just get a good breakfast and a sandwich early afternoon.

Go to julian graves / holland and barrett of similar and stock up on dried bits. Thumbs Up

I maintain that home made sandwiches never taste as good as 'some' of the ones you can buy.

Tesco sandwiches/wraps are really very good, and the price is quite reasonable compared to the rest of the market. Ginsters are also good, though massively expensive to the point I will avoid it if I can. Ranges like tesco also enable you to alternate enough to not got bored.

Check me out, justifying my massively expensive and wasteful habit Laughing

I'm on the road all day, and tend to survive on pre-packed stuff from garages and shops I come across. Very expensive, £5 per day minimum unless its tesco which can get you decently supplied for £4. This is more than double what the rest of my food costs, and quite a chunk of salary at the end of the month.

I have been saying I will make my own lunch for 3-4 years, I manage a few days then just revert to lazyness.

I also have a coke/chocolate addiction, so even if I made my own, I would in all likelyhood find myself stopping anyway for a coke fix and spending £2-3 anyway. So why fight it Wink

When i'm having a shit day coke and chocolate makes me feel better, unfortunate fact of life.

The days I really fuck myself over, is when I skip breakfast, so will quite often stop for garage food twice in a day. £10 per day is enough to upset me into being more disciplined with breakfast, but it does happen occasionally.

Luckily enough the job is so physical, it will destory any calories you can throw at it.

then just stop at a supermarket

That`s what i`d do if i had to eat out as part of my job.

Most supermarkets are really good these days for light lunches and snacks.Take a trip over to the deli counters and you`ll be surprised at the selections on offer.

Freshly roasted chickens, pork ribs, curries and stews, loads of different salads, toasted baguettes with fillings, the list goes on.
You could get a nice lunch,a dessert or piece of fruit, and a drink for about £5.....thats not bad value for money.

Fast food joints are ok but i wouldnt go there more than once/twice a week if i were you.
(can`t beat a good kebab though...yummy! Thumbs Up )

Get a pack of buns or a stotty. Get some tubs of sandwich filler. The ones i get are like tuna and sweetcorn with mayo already added. It's like 12 seconds to make a sarnie. I get chicken, smoked bacon and mayo tubs aswell.

They are really handy aswell. Make some pasta if you have time and add a few tubs of the sandwich filler. It's awesome i live off it.

Driving jobs often involve loading and unloading, can be 5minutes or three hours of work depending on what you do.

What can I say to that apart from come out for a day with me and i'll show you what a real days worth of old fashioned physical labour involves. Wink (Genuine offer, I could use an apprentice Razz )

By on the road, I would mean away from a home base, usually the middle of bumfuck nowhere, so what difference does it make. Circumstances are the same, you still can't drop everything and go home, as you could if you were office based or some other static employment.*

Yeah was only a toungue in cheek comment Razz .

If i was un-employed i probably would actually take up the offer, i'm alright for now though. Sitting in an office on my backside for 3.5 hours a night is easy money Laughing .
