PostPosted: 14:47 - 15 Oct 2009    Post subject: CBT every two years?????????? Reply with quote

My mrs rides a 125 ped. She has ridden this for about 5 years only on her initial CBT. I told her she should renew this every two years I think.
She has had absolutely no problems with the police, she got pulled a year ago and as she did not realise at that time the CBT expired, when asked if she had a CBT she replied yes and after checks on license/insurance/mot she was let on her way.
It seems to me that they are not strict on renewing CBT's or do you think she just go lucky and I should get her to redo it. I guess she would have issues with insurance in the event of an accident.
Also she will soon take her test to drive a car, does this make any differance?

Nope, I think that is for a moped. 125cc requires a CBT.

Correct, 50cc can be ridden on a car licence without a CBT before that date but anything over that (125cc) MUST hold a CBT.

And pleading ignorance isn't an excuse... Rolling Eyes

(That IS the word I was looking for wasn't it!? Wink )

£80-£130 depending on whether you hire a bike from them and where it is.

Redoing the CBT every two years costs more than just doing the full license test.

Get her to do her test. Thumbs Up

Pass your car test before Feb ( I think) 2001 you have full moped entitlement (50cc) and a provisional scooter (125) which means on a 50 you can carry people, no L's but on a 125 you must display L plates, can't carry pillion or go on motorways.
Pass your test after that date and you need to do a CBT to ride either, and renew every 2 years

Wrong. You can't ride a 125cc at all on just a car licence, you need to pass your CBT.

I guess in theory a really strict traffic cop could do you for driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and because you don't have a CBT then your wife's insurance would be invalid.

If the copper wanted to, he could charge you with a fixed penalty notice which would be about £200 (Maximum is £5000) and 6 points for no insurance and for driving other than in accordance with a licence carries a maximum fine of £1000 and 6 points.

True, but she's still going to need a new CBT in order to do her test though I think renewing a CBT, especially if she has her own bike, aught to be a bit cheaper.

Most companies will incorporate the CBT into the training for the full test, say half day/day one. Probably cheaper that way.

I was with people on mine that spent the first half day of a 3 day DAS renewing the CBT. Thumbs Up

I just asked her this and she said she remembers being told she would have to redo CBT but she couldnt remember the details and because she has never been ask by insurance companies or police more recently I think she just assumed she was ok still
But as stated previously ignorance is no excuse

If she is caught it will be 3-6 points for 'riding otherwise than in accordance with a licence'.

If she has been riding 5 years now, wouldn't it be broad as long just doing a DAS?

Seeing as we are on the topic of the CBT, what are the rules regarding using your own bike? Mine expires soon but I am getting a Monkey around christmas time. Can I take the CBT on this?

Hi

No legal reason you cannot use your own bike for your CBT. However you need to be insured on it and it is probable that your insurance doesn't cover you unless you have a valid CBT. Hence you wouldn't be insured to ride it doing a fresh CBT if you old one had expired.

All the best

Keith
