hi,

i am 16, i have a 2002 gilera dna 50cc, it broke down the other day on the A52, i hadnt dun anything to modify it, it has done 5100 miles.

It was going 48 mph then suddenly just slowed down and died. I tried starting it and it did, however only if i full throttled and it wouldnt actually go.

It blows out white smoke out of the exaust.

Any help please!

Could possibly need a new top end..
BTW a 50, with no mods chugging out 48mph is pretty much unlikely..and if you was..there is your problem.

What colour is your spark plug?

16 + 50cc = ragged hard n proper to me..

Edit :
from here - https://www.maxmoto.co.uk/gilera_dna_50_125_180.shtml
50: restricted to 31 mph
125: 68 mph
180: 76 mph

If it's de-restricted 45mph is realistic and the speedo is never going to be 100% accurate.

Stop being a picky bastard and quoting shit.

White smoke (which isn't smoke, it's steam) suggests head gasket.

I would guess from previous experience of 2 strokes, that you are suffering from heat seizure, the fact that it blows out white smoke and not blue would make me think that it is not getting enough or any 2 stroke oil.

Not sure about this particular bike, do you add oil to your petrol tank or does it have a Oil tank?

Anyway how to find out

1. Check your oil level
2. Check the oil pipe / pump (crystallization of 2 stroke oil can occur if the oil gets wet or over heated)
3. If teh above are ok, then you will need to pull of the top end and check your barrel and piston and of course piston rings.
4. If it is a minor heat seizure then you might get away with just changing the rings but i suspect from what you say that you have a damaged piston / rings, which will damage the bore of the barrel.
5. Dont panic it is quite cheap and easy to get a rebore done.

By the way i could be talking complete bollox, so i accept no responsibility for anything i have just said

Sounds pretty much right, car did it once..but that was HUGE plumes of white smoke!
I dont have any experience with 2 strokes, but something along the lines of checking the head parts would be a good start!

Firstly let me apologise i presumed rather foolishly that it was air cooled (a 50cc lc why)

looking at the other options that people have suggested it reminds me of my YZ similar problem turned out a water seal had gone.

Yeah it would seem water is getting into the combustion area. I do not have the relevant knowledge however, we shall hope that the likes of Sickpup, Stinkwheel, G, or Kickstart will post.

Digi-speedo, followed a car once and could see their huge dash center speedo reading the same as me.

Can hit 55mph stock fun bike.
