What do you think, GPX 250R

Hey, you may have noticed, maybe not that i have an ad in the classified section looking for a bike, to rebuild the engine as part of a uni project. with the intention of using it as a commuter over a winter once im done

iv found a GPX250R

Its a 1988, 38k miles, and has had recent fork seals, full service and rear suspension overhaul. Cosmetically its not that bad either, crack in front fairing and tear in the seat

Its being advertised at £450, with 11months mot and 12 months tax, should be able to get some off of that as well i think

Just wondered on your thoughts,what is it like to work on? Is it a good price etc

Iv never done anything like this before so quite kean to get a cheap bike and get started. I would prefer an old cg125 but they tend to hold their value fairly well and havent found any bargains just yet

i've never worked on one before but for the price isn't to bad you should brake even try to get him to around 400 or even 350 if you can

My 2p worth. If you want a rebuild project, get an aircooled honda twin. Like a superdream or similar

They are fairly simple, easy to work on and parts are comparatively easy to get hold of. They are also pretty "universal" in their design and logically set out.

terrible bikes.(yet another of the terrible bikes ive owned)
nah they arn't that bad,
but i would do what stinkwheel has said if you really want to learn about bikes,
unlike stinkwheel i wouldnt go for a honda, mainly because im sick to death of doing the stupid shell bearings on the big end,
but i would go for a aircooled single or twin

This is the predicessor to the new 250 ninja (GPX250 was called ninja in the states)

Wierdly enough the old GPX250 has a fair bit more power than the new ninja (new ninja about 30 GPX about 45)

If it has proof for the work done it is a good buy and should be good fun. and should handle pretty well if the suspention has been refreshed and it has a decent set of rubber on it. Parts maybe hard to find but it sounds like a good starter bike to me.

i was originally looking for a superdream, but not finding much local made me browse more generally. Ill keep looking for one though

Im currently using my zx6r, but would rather use something else though winter if i can help it! So the uni project is a good excuse to be honest to get a hack at the same time when im done

Found a fairly tidy cb250 air cooled twin as suggested

Should have it tuesday with some luck and ill see what its like!

anyway, anyone know the best way of insuring this as briefly and for as cheaply as possible just to get it home?

a full year is £90 tpft, but id rather not do a year, will any companies (providing i dont crash) allow me to cancel the policy free within say 2 weeks? or am i likely to get hit for fees

i tried those daily insure sites but its 6 weeks till im 25 and they wont allow me to do it!

edit: they charge cancellation fees, kinda obvious i guess, ebike monthly was £27 for a month

grrrrr what a pain, my any bike insurance isnt valid either as im not 25, 6 weeks god dammit, same reason i cant use the daily one i found on google....
