I recently decided to fit a new piston and rings to my old (2000) KMX 125, only because it's been several thousand miles since it was last done, whist doing this I found a hairline crack inside the cylinder near the top of the head.
It appears to be superficial, however, what bothers me is how it occurred, the head is the standard nikosil plated one, there are no engine modifications that would unduly stress the head or piston, so I am not sure what has caused this, maybe it's just old age.
I will have to get another head, although I am unsure whether to replace it with another nikosil one or just get one that has been steel sleeved. My first thought is steel because it's probably cheaper, quicker and could always be rebored if necessary, but I might be overlooking something. I have not fitted the piston kit, I don't want to risk further problems prior to resolving the problem.
I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.
Thanks in advance |

You can get it sleeved for less than £100. I need to get my kmx barrel done due to a seizure which has ripped the surface of the bore to bits. A new barrel costs around £300 and second hand ones are hard to come by.
