You reckon I could get away with the generic green petrol can as the fuel tank on a bike for MOT?

Thinking proper like... Tapping it out for a proper fuel tap and making some mounts up to hold it to the bike securely....

Any reason why this wouldnt be legal?

i think it should be as long as the bike runs and does what they need to check then it shouldn't be a problem i wouldn't have thought

You do not need a tank for a MOT.

Petrol tank not a testable item in itself as mentioned above, however a non-testable item can fail the MOT if it is considered defective and liable to cause harm or damage.

I am not in the right frame of mind to go over all of the C&U regulations as they were updated, however it may be worth your while doing so to be able to quote when plastic tanks were allowed as section 39 of the Road Vehciles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 state

Laughing A more suitable question would be...

"Is it worth MOTing a bike that is in such a condition that I'd consider tapping a generic green petrol can for the fuel tank?"

Good god man, even a rat enthusiast would be taken aback.

The bike generally is ok.

Its a stolen recovered tho and the thieving pikeys have tried (and failed) to torch it by the look of it...

Its all glazy inside and rusted to fuck... the rest of the bike is a little rusty but still OKish for a 1990 bike...

It would only be a short term fix, just to get it going while it get some money for a proper tank...

Doooo it!

I really wanna see some pics Laughing I was told it's an MOT failure if, for example, your bike was to fall on it's side and petrol can start leaking out. As long as it doesn't I'm sure it'll be ok.... it's just that if you DO come off on a bike with a plastic petrol tank and said petrol tank contacts ground at high speed... then a leakage of fuel seems hugely like to me, possibly an epic fire trail / explosion.

dunno about the high speed one because i'm sure the aprilla rs125 tanks are made from plastic, i know my dads old 96 model was made from plastic anyway

But there are many different types of plastic each with their own characteristics with regards strength, inflammability etc.

Hi

No idea if it would be MOTable.

However plastic tanks used to be illegal but they changed the rules in the mid 1990s. About the time the Triumph Tiger was launched, as without the change the Tiger wouldn't have been UK legal.

If your old tank is still fuel tight then I would use that. Possibly clean it would first, but chucking some nuts in there (nut and bolt type) and shaking it a lot (without any trace of petrol in there).

All the best

Keith
