Today I did - shooting antiques

For the first time in around 40 years, today me and the old man took his shotguns out for a spot of clay pigeon shooting.

I started clay shooting earlier in the year and have started to get into it alot now, back in march my grandad passed away leaving my dad with his shotgun and his dads shotgun, so for the first time in about 40 years at least, we took them out for a shoot.

My great grandads gun is a double barrel side by side, custom made circa 1920, built by the Midland gun company, for him made to measure which he walked all the way to Birmingham to pick up, from south Wales.

Quite a nice gun to fire actually, very pretty double hammerlock, need to get it serviced though it misfired twice within the space of 10 shots something I am a bit wary of, and its always better to be safe than sorry with firearms


My grandads is, as far as I can tell a Harrington Richardson Topper, circa 1940 ish, very light weight gun, with a short stock, hammer action again, and by christ does it kick, I could not shoot any more than 3 rounds with it, from the end of the barrel where you originally aimed, to where it recoiled to after firing, there was around 2 foot of recoil in the barrel upwards


The Double barrel is a lovely gun to shoot, but the sights on it are very hard, and its quite difficult to use.

All in all though good fun to shoot these relics, we checked them out first to see if they could be fired, nothing seemed a miss but we were still wary as 40+ years without a round going through them is a long time, have to thank my grandad for looking after them so well, was nice though, for the first time in 40 years those guns rung out across a valley, and they are also a damn site louder than the Winchester we usually use

Will have to put some pics up of the guns, for now though my shoulder will rest, as that single barrel has really hurt it lol

Sadly not, well some of the clays we have used are near enough antiques by now

Finally uploaded another picture, all be it thrice times, but here is the shoulder breaker, this thing is a seriously hard gun to use, I couldnt fire more than 3 shots with this, everyone else managed no more than 5 in a row.

Out of the six of us who fired this gun
1 managed 5 shots with 2 clays hit
1 managed 1 shot with 1 clay hit
1 managed 2 shots with 0 clays hit and a sponge in there shoulder
1 managed 4 shots with 1 clay hit
1 managed 3 shots with a sponge in there shoulder, a tac vest and a shooting jacket with padding
I managed 3 shots 0 clays hit with no padding, it wasnt big nor clever and I am paying the price for it now, being such a light gun with a short stock, the kick on it was immense
