lids ? low funds best to get

new to the whole bike scene and want a lid dont have alot to spare but i have found a lid made by nitro for 29.99 but will it still give me the same sort of saftey as other high priced helmets ?

General rule is that you get what you pay for....

Saying that I'm a member of the 30 quid brigade and today did a 250 mile trip with two stops reasonable comfortably....

Its not just safety, its also things like comfort, weight etc etc....

Just try on as many as you can and see what things you like/dislike....

I personally have a BOX 30 quid helmet and altho if I bought it again I'd take the next size up, its not too bad!

I picked up a BOX BX2 the other day, perfect fit, £49 (coulda got cheaper elsewhere but got it from local bikers yard, saves travel/postage) checked it on the SHARP site, 4 out of 5 stars..Nice!

A £30 lid and a £500 have both been tested to the same safety standards.

The lid needs to fit you well. If the £30 no name lid fits you better than the latest £500 Arai lid then the £30 is the best one for you.

Try on as many different lids as possible and you'll then know what fits you well and what doesn't fit you well.

Increase your £30 budget if you can, if you're new to biking then I'd say spend a bit more on your lid and less on the bike.

make sure it fits you and your comfortable in it then it shouldn't be to bad for 30 quid, i got mine from lidl i think and that was like 40 and has lasted me a few years so far

I managed to get my Lazer Vertigo for £30 IIRC, from a place that did sold helmets in 'last year's colours'. I hate the design though but it did well in the SHARP test, is light and has a Pinlock, as well as a nice chin scarf bit that stops nasty draughts getting in from the bottom. Thumbs Up

I have a Nitro cheapy lid. Last time I saw one just like it was at a bike show, for £24.99 or something like that. I found it quite comfy compared to my Caberg V2R but I prefer the Caberg as it has the 2nd visor to flip down when it's sunny. I'd quite happily go for another cheapy lid.

If you have a J&S shop near you, try on the Suomy Trek.... or try it on somewhere else and order it frrom J&S online. Its a well made comfortable lid for £50.

I've seen the Lidl or Aldi helmets. They may well be ok lids but there is no way i could wear a lid stamped with the make 'B Square' emblazened across the front.

I have a Box BX2 £45 and a Caberg Trip which I got as a freebie but sell for £99 and cant fault either, the box is very comfortable and quite and is my current favoured helmet, the trip I will use more in the summer as its a flip front with sun visor. As said previously the best helmet for you is the one that fits the best and is the most comfortable regardless of whether its a cheap or mega pounds lid, try loads on but wear them in the shop for 15 mins or so to see if any part starts annoying or hurting you. Thumbs Up

Recently got a HJC lotus for the father in law it was about £150 in J&S at the time but found it on Ghost bikes for £30 odd, the most important thing was it fitted well

I'd be inclined not to go out and buy a 33bhp restricted fireblade as a first bike and buy a cheaper bike. Therefore having extra cash available for protective items, chances are you'll be thinking about replacing the bike before you need to replace your gear.

I dont buy expensive lids anymore. I've knocked Arai's and Shoei's off my seat or dinged them whilst carrying them just as easy as i do to a cheap lid.
I tend to pay anything between £50 and £100 max for a lid nowadays.... but as you get older designer labels and the latest must have graphics aren't so important.

Sharp test is another government flop of a test....(been as they have revised it a good few times)

You think the top line racers would be wearing a £30 lid over what they currently wear just because the goverment rated it higher? Do you not think its strange how not many of the well known, more expensive brands of helmet, score as good as a lid half the price?

They arent tested to the same standard either. They pass a minimal test to get the 'gold' sticker ( you can buy the god damn stickers on their own if you look hard enough!). Alot of manufacturers put ALOT more work into testing and keeping your noggin in one peice...

No doubt i will be karma raped for this, but meh
