Our lass just bought a printer for uni. Its a basic printer etc etc. It doesn't come with a fucking cable to connect it to the computer. How fucking stupid is that. Its not even a standard double ended usb cable its a specific one that you have to buy separately wtf is all that about. Fucking money grabbing bastards.

the ones i have bought havent but they have been standard USB printer connections so i have had spares from older ones (which probably didnt come with them either lol)

I got the inside-info on this scam from somebody in the industry a few years ago. Apparently the printers used to be supplied with a connecting cable but the Dixons group dictated that cables were not to be supplied, so that they could make extra money selling them seperately (at grossly inflated prices too).

I got this from the son of a big cheese in Dixons.

We bought ours from PC world. I wouldn't even think that they wouldn't come with it. We popped down to the local computer store and he sold us a cable for 3 pound.

Check the blurb on the box. My niece wanted a printer so we went to Currys and found a decent ex display one on sale. I opened the box to check and found no cable. Pointed this out to the dweeb who tried to tell me they don't come with cables. The box blurb said it came with one, manager was called, cable mysteriously supplied.

Cables are a total racket.

I buy all my cables from cpc.farnell.com .

USB cables (various genders and types) are usually in the region of £1-2. Push it to £3-4 if you want shielding/gold plate or particularly long ones.

Bought a new CAT6 ethernet cable for my computer the other day. 86p.

Only trouble is, you need a £40 minimum order to get free delivery. Between myself and my mate, no problem racking up an order. It's one of those dangerous catalogues. I even do most of my xmas shopping from CPC.

ive found that when buying a new printer, say that you will buy a set of replacement cartridges if they throw in the usb cable. then pick the cheapest replacements and the gold plated cable

I used to work for a printer manufacturer - we never supplied cables with the printers.

Why?

Well, many of the printers had multiple interfaces - Parallel, serial, USB & LAN - so it would involve supplying 4 different cables with every printer.

Cost goes up, margin goes down. Simple economics.

However, we did sell interface cables separately, and at a good mark-up too. I'm no salesman (worked in tech-supp), so would always advise the customer to go to the likes of RS, CPC, Farnell etc and buy it at a greatly reduced cost.
