I owned an gilera SMT 50 which i had standard exhaust and it did around 40mph when i bought it.
it was only 3 years old when the exhaust snapped on it.
For the standard exhaust i was quoted upwards of £350.
Instead of buying this, i decided to go for a stainless steel performance exhaust which cost me £150
it got me a good topend speed but of corse was above 30mph.
I cannot see how i was supposed to spend twice the money on a restricted exhaust which would only blow again which is also against the law
Anyone else find all these laws a bit weird? ____________________ I didnt slap you. I high fived your face. |

Hi
If it does more than ~30mph then it is not a moped (ignoring ones that are over 30 years old and which have pedals), so not legal for a 16 year old.
As to the prices, that is just original makers prices for you. They can be quite hideous for something they have made in the thousands and have had to tool up for to build the bikes anyway.
All the best

Hi
If it is fairly newish then if it does over 30mph then it isn't a moped. It is just a 50cc motorcycle. Could still be happily ridden by someone with a suitable licence (ie, 17 years old on a provisional, as long as it doesn't manage more than 11kW).
Mopeds used to be defined as under 50cc and capable of being propelled with pedals. This changed in (from memory) 1977 when the requirement for pedals was dropped by the top speed was capped at 30mph. If you have a moped from before then you can still ride it at 16 (I think, might have been blocked by other rules since but not noticed anything) even if it does over 30mph, but it must have the pedals.
All the best

If you are 16 a 49cc that is post 1977 (I know it's late '70s) has to be restricted to 30mph.
If you are 16 and buy a 49cc made before 1977 (once again, could be wrong year), it can go as fast as you tune it to go and it is still legal.
If you are 17+ it'll be treated like any other motorbike and just needs to be in terms with your other restrictions (14.6bhp if you are a learner, 33bhp if you are on a restricted licence).
EDIT: Can't compete with Keith's speed |

Then just need to get it working ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...
