A wee while ago my Newfoundland "Norman" was diagnosed with hip dysplasia Crying or Very sad . Luckly enough he was under 9 months old which meant they could carry out a triple pelvic osteotomy to correct it.

Well he got his first operation and after two weeks, it turned out that the plate had come loose, so he had to go back into the vets and get another plate installed with extra wire to hold it in place. That was back in August and we have only had him home since the middle of October.
Today he went back for his check-up and the vet is more than happy with his progress and says that considering the complications he has had, his recovery is is more that what he would expect if the situation had been normal Very Happy .

He is now alowed out short walks to build up his muscle and his fitness again after several months of complete rest. He had only been alowed out the back garden for the toilet but had to be on his lead.

Norman is currently 10 months old and 8,1/2st. His weight has went down due to his operation and light diet. In the pic sitting with me he looks quite small, only cause I'm 6'4" Laughing My wife is only 5', it's funny watching her play with him Laughing

hehe it's an awesome dog, looks lovely, does it get much bigger? Shocked

Love jack russels too, little dogs but tend not to be so yappy Laughing (from my experience anyway, may be wrong!)

He'll grow to about 31" at the shoulder (he's 28" just now) and he's still to fill out a bit. He'll end up about 11.5 - 13st Shocked

Yeah my mums JR isnt as yappy as you'd expect, although small dogs tend to be pretty dominant over Norman, he just doesnt care, he's too laid back for his own good sometimes. The neighbours have got a wee Westie and it yaps and nips Norman all the time he just stands there with his "duuhh" face on not giving a toss Laughing

How many pints of doggy-drool do you have to mop up on a daily basis?

You'd be surprised had how little he (and the breed in general) actually drools. Yeah when he's panting there is a wee bit and when he takes a drink most of it ends up on the floor. But it's not as bad a St Bernard, thankfully Smile

A bit too big for my liking, but a fabulous looking doggie!

What's the long term prognosis? Has the op cured him for good, or will there be problems in the future? Hope you've got him insured...

Funny thing about small dogs, they do tend to dominate over the large ones. We had a papillon, weighing in at 4kg, and even the neighbour's police Alsatian was submitting to him, as were all the other neighbourhood dogs. Yet, he never bit them or barked at them, just gave them the evil eye.

Is it just me or in this picture does it look like it has a massive head/shoulders but tiny stumpy legs. I'm guessing it doesn't look like that in real life.

No, it just seems to be a funny angle that he's sitting at. He's still growing so he goes through stages of looking kinda daft. When he was 5 months he was really lanky and skinny, now he's filled out a bit more but still has to grow a couple of inches.

The outlook is good for the hip that got operated on. Only downside was that the other hip was bad too but with the worst side being corrected then hopefully it should pull itself in. The vet was very upbeat about his recovery and his future Thumbs Up
Hopefully once he has fully recovered he can get back to doing is water rescue training Thumbs Up Plus I'll be getting another one but more than likely a Landseer (White and Black).

Thankfully he is insured! But we had to pay upfront at the vets first, which after the two operations at the long stay cost us around £5,300!

What a handsome chap Mr. Green (that's Norm, not you WK!! Rolling Eyes )

I'll second the looking really geeky as they grow - my old boy went through some really strange growing phases and looked well freaky at that age! He turned into the most beautiful boy at about 18 months old, so keep the pics because it's funny looking back!

Water training is great fun for you and dog as well as great exercise. I used to love it, but it was definitely good to have somewhere to keep a wet dog 'til they're dried off a bit, as they hold a lot of water when wet and you definitely don't need that in your house!! Shocked

Really pleased that the op has gone well and that he's on the mend now. Give him a big hug from this Newfie lover!! Wink

Yeah I cant wait to get him back into swimming, it'll make a change from him trying to swim in his water bowl!
He seems to love retrieving submerged toys and getting his whole head under the water! I really want to get a dry suit so that I can go swimming with him at the classes and let him "rescue me". It's good exercise for him too as it doesn't put any weight on his joints. Plus ,as you know, a Newfie is usually happiest when splashing about the water. He also has a tendency to "retreive" kids that are playing in water Laughing

Aww he's gorgeous i love the jack Russell as well. I have a jack russell and a patterdale. They are both small dogs but think they are 6ft tall. Both of mine have had fights with alsations and staffies. They deffo have small man syndrome. I also have a labrador and he loves sleeping on the bed or sitting on the couch with you. Which is alright if he wasn't so big and heavy. He loves the water as well, if you get he hose pipe out he tries to eat the water lol. Glad the op has gone well i would hate to have to pay vet fees i haven't got insurance Sad

A friend of mine has got a puppy who had the same operation done last week. He's a little westie though, so the other end of the spectrum lol

He was forever tipping the water bowl over himself and never could resist a puddle. One time my neighbours children were playing in a paddling pool nextdoor and he spent the whole time going beserk running up and down the garden - he was desperate to 'rescue' them Rolling Eyes

Does Norm blow bubbles in his water bowl? Tonka dog always did - just stuck his nozzle in, exhaled and looked thoroughly pleased with himself!! Laughing

Goodness, I can't tell you how much I miss having a proper big fluffy dog about the place. The Grottie is lovely but he's no Bear Crying or Very sad

Yeah he blows bubbles too!! Just likes getting wet Laughing Whenever he visits anybody he'll go straight to their bathroom and sit in the shower and look at you like "well hurry up and turn on!" Laughing

He's also got a few fluffy toys that he will sit and suck on, he doesn't chew it or try and rip it, he'll just lie down (preferably on your knee Shocked ) and suck on the toy like it's a dummy! when he does that his big paws move on the toy as if he's kneading bread Confused He's definitely a character.
I cant even begin to imagine the house with out him Crying or Very sad

That is a cracking big dug WK!.
I see three of them walking about Hamilton regularly. two of them are owned by the same family and look loveable big dogs.
I often wondered when i see these dogs walking about, I wonder if that fella had to sell a kidney to feed that big MO_FO!! Laughing

We'll usually take Norman down to either Hamilton Palace grounds or round one of the walks at Chatelherault park. Might have been me you seen Laughing
I've met the couple with the two Newfies a couple of times. They are both huge.

For a big breed of dog they don't cost more than say a Lab to feed. They aint all that big eaters. Plus you have to watch the amount of food they get in one sitting due to their susceptibility to bloat. He gets fed two meals of dry food a day, plus any wee treats if he's been good. Although he's tall enough now that he nicked my Greggs Steak Bake off the table Evil or Very Mad .

Young dogs often do that when they're sleepy and relaxed; he's effectively suckling. By kneading the mom, he's stimulating the milk flow.

I like your 'rescue' stories - my dog (SBT) absolutely hates water and will do anything he can to avoid getting his paws wet, i think perhaps that because of their dense musculature they don't float very well!!
(Possibly why you never really see many black swimmers at Olympic level)
The only time i've seen my dog go into water was when we were all on holiday earlier this year - whilst the kids were playing in the sea, my (then pregnant) wife paddled out a bit. My dog ran in and sort of stood in front of her and looked up with a 'no further please, are you sure this is a good idea?' expression on his face.

Does it take much work to keep his coat clean and tidy - i could never have a long haired dog, i just hate finding long hair around the place. My daughter has long blonde hair, and i'm always finding it stuck to things around the house, unblocking the sink etc etc.
