Hi,

I recently purchased a 2000 yamaha sr125 in pretty good condition. It runs great but after i adjusted the chain slack the FRONT wheel started to make noise when rotated. It could just be moisture because it rained the night before but i'm a newbie and have only owned a bike for 2 weeks so i want to be careful.

I know this is a stupid question bu any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Could be a few things.
Arrow Wheel rubbing on something.
Arrow Wheel bearings on the way out (more a sort of "grumbling" noise when turned).
Arrow Brakes binding slightly due to light rust on the drum/disc (would stop after a few hundred yards).
Arrow Brakes binding slighty due to being overtight (noise wouldn't stop, handling would be horrible, brake calliper/drum hot without having used brake (carefull, sometimes REALLY hot).
Arrow Speedo drive in need of lubrication.

Hehe, I've had this one...

It's the shain making the noise, not the front wheel. It just sounds like that's where the noise is coming from.

Don't know why it does, but it just does. I had this on my 125, and when i changed the chain, the noise dissappeared. Very odd indeed. The fact you say you've just adjusted the chain is a give away too.

The SR chain shouldn't be too tight, I did that once and it whined all the way to work and back again. the adjustment is easy though. just adjust another notch up and use the little viewing window for the chain on the chainguard... this window gives the right tightness range for the chain as well.

I had a look at it, for some reason it doesnt make the noise when i put it on the center stand and spin the back wheel. And the noise comes when the engine is off too. The front brakes are working fine and the handling is still the same. I'm going to isolate the front wheel to and see what happens

And about the chain adjusting plates, the manual says to move them equally to set the tension accordingly, but what i dont get is the little notch they're supposed to latch on to, when tightened and then moved back to loosen the chain the plates just fall freely because they no longer catch on the notch. Am I doing something wrong?

What sort of noise? Some noise is normal - you shouldn't really hear it while riding, but if you put the bike on the stand and spin the front wheel it's quite normal to hear a sort of 'dragging' noise.

As long as the wheel spins properly it's not a problem. It's probably just the brake pads rubbing against the disc (which, due to the design of disc brakes, they do all the time - believe it or not).

Like I say though, you definitely shouldn't hear it while riding.

Did you loosen the rear wheel spindle nut first?
