Thats interesting.
I personally found that when I did my CBT a couple of months ago, I was suprised at the minimal standard needed for the certificate to be issued.
I only did my CBT, test training and then took my test- didnt have any other road experience but I got loads out of the extra training.
But the positive thing of the CBT is the bike size restriction |

I think though it might be a good idea to have the driving lessons type idea for some.
I understand that it is very basic training, but I found it concerning that the two who I was with had bikes waiting at home for them and so I wouldnt want to go near them when they are out and about lol. After all there is only a certain amount that you can be taught during a CBT. But practice makes perfect |

Hi
Trouble is that it would probably kill off much of the young rider market, and without younger riders almost certainly far less older people would remember about bikes and then learn. Good chance of reducing the number of riders greatly over a decade or 2.
One down side of the CBT is that some people do it and think they have been taught plenty having "passed", and don't bother to learn anything else.
CBT has been around for less than 20 years. Before that you could just get your licence and jump straight on a learner bike (and many of us did).
Not sure what the solution is to get people to have more idea of riding without pricing a bike licence out of existance for many.
All the best

Not sure where some of you sat your CBT...
When I did mine (did it twice due to passage of time and laziness) on both occassions with the same school I found it to be the most useful part of the learning process, I'd go as far to say it should be introduced for driving in order to give the learning process a decent start. In a car, the usual rules for learning would still apply though.
Anyway, that I managed to pass the full test and have had several safe years riding (touch wood) on the strength of a CBT and a 2 hour lesson seems to me to be to it's credit.
I do agree though, some of the people I took the CBT with were exceptionally cack-handed, although they were asked to return the following day though. (On the first one, one young chap was all over the place but got his certificate right enough.)
Could be an issue with uniformity, that isn't the right word, I mean quality control, ummm, consistency!

Hi
Think CBT was brought in to try and cut down on the numbers who jumped straight on a bike and taught themselves how to ride, plenty of whom killed themselves. Difficult to know how well it worked at this as although deaths dropped the number of riders was dropping as well
The CBT is meant to be to a pretty universal standard, although from comments it seems that isn't always what happens.
Personally I do think a lot of experience as a learner is a good idea, compared to a desperate cramming session on a short course. Give the knowledge a chance to settle in then be corrected if forgotten, rather than just rely on it being fresh. Also allows plenty of time for the mechanics of riding to become 2nd nature rather than something you have to think about. In this way a few lessons a week is probably better than a short course, although probably not as good as gaining extra experience as a learner as well. However not sure how many miles as a learner is reasonable (think I did something like 25000).
All the best
