Legal and you wouldn't get pulled because they don't work

But from their description, it could just be a can of black spray paint and that would work. Razz

Those plate sprays do not work. If they did then the motoring press (and normal press) would be telling everyone about them.

However there are some that do work, in which case expect rhe very first police car fitted with cameras/ANPR to pull you over and do you for perverting the course of justice.

So yes, if you used one that worked then it is illegal.

They were showing these products on one of those police programs they seem to show over and over again on TV these days.
Out of the ones they tested most did nothing and the one product that did work (to an extent), was noticable to the naked eye and the police would pull you over on sight. Also although the reg was not distinguishable on the normal pictures you could see the reg clearly by looking at the negative view, which was demonstrated on the program.
Never no though could all be police propaganda to stop people attempting to outsmart the system.

They tried these out on an episode of Mythbusters. Along with many other licence obscuring type things.

None worked.

Only way you're gonna get away scot free after setting off a camera is if there is no 'film' (not recording/sending, what ever these digital ones do).

On the same line as the guy with his foot covering the plate.

Have you noticed how many couriers in London seem to have that mysterious problem of the strap from there courier bag always falling down and partially covering their Number Plate. "a Pure accident i am sure"

Its the first thing you learn in courier school. When i was dispatching on my 125, a had a chain wrapped around the topbox that conveniently dangled down obscuring 75% of my plate, require3d with all the bus lane cameras etc

I've always been skeptical if this stuff works, I doubt you can be pulled for it because how could they tell you were using it?

However is it really worth the risk and the constant paranoia just to avoid the occasional speed ticket? Unless you ride like you have a rocket up your arse there isn't really much to worry about in your area?

Concealing evidence is classed as perverting the course...

Unlikely this would be used, however it is a serious offence resulting in jailtime of between 4 & 18 months.

I saw one of those shows, they were in slough and a car went past with the plate invisible on the onboard camera, but clearly visible to the cops. They talked about charging him for the dodgy plate, can't remember what for though. Also, now I think about it, I can't remember whether they ever showed it on the TV cameras.

I must have easily set off that many speed cameras in my 13 years on the road and have never got a ticket from one either and it ain't because I sprayed my number plate with snake oil Laughing

I think a lot of cameras flash without actually doing you.

Try again.

First there has to be an actual offence so if you are driving normally with no offences being committed. This was established when the Police attempted to prosecute a lorry driver for flashing his headlight after a mobile speed camera to warn people. The judgement state that unless the Police could prove he warned someone breaking the law then he couldn't be charged with perverting the cause of justice.
