I am fed up of messing about ... my poor old KLR - great bike that it has been - really needs some attention in the near future if I want to keep using it and lets face it, there are much better bikes out there for doing what I want to do .... the KTM 250 I got has a fecked engine ... and isn't really economical to repair ...

eBay is full of w4nkers and a lottery ....

So I thought feck it ... put my hand deep in my pocket .... went down the dealers and bought a nice shiny WR250F!!! Dance!

Traded in my KLR (for peanuts) - job done; I pick it up next week!!! Smile

I was/am all excited!! ... new bike buzz ... new bike buzz Smile

That said, had my farewell go on the KLR today ... just some light green laning ... its a great bike and easy to ride (as long as the going doesn't get too tough) ... I was riding along wondering if I had done the right thing signing on the line for the WR*!! Shocked

*undoubtedly its a 'better' bike, but its a lot of money if the KLR was doing all I needed of it Sad

I am almost embarrassed to say!! Embarassed But less than a third what I paid for it just a few months ago! Razz

The KLR might have gone for 2-3+ times more than my trade in price with a good run on eBay* - but it has given me so much fun/pleasure already, I don't consider it really 'owes' me anything. A trade in is a hassle (and guilt) free, so happy to take the effective 'hit' for a easy/CBA sale!! Thumbs Up

*or it might not have sold at all!

The latter part of the week, exact day to be confirmed! Smile

As for your bike, I'd like to think I know my stuff as much as the next man (that has been keenly tinkering in an amateur fashion for ~25 years) - happy to have a look, but to be honest, I rode it last time you used it and it sounded/felt 'ok' .... if I remember rightly it did have a bit of a rattle on the overrun - probably a bit of piston-slap, but engine noises are a bit bike specific, so I am not sure I can really advise any more. Didn't you say the balancer is known to be a bit noisy on them? Thinking

There is certainly nothing 'wrong' with it, it starts well and pulls strongly, but sadly you need to go in there and start replacing things if you want to do 'preventative maintenance' (good plan as when they go pop they get expensive ... also will spoil your day!! Wink).

Presuming it has never been touched, I'd say at a minimum a piston, ring and little end would be a smart move. Is it a steel or nikosil job on the CRM?

In summery, happy to have a look, but I see little point. If you want to get some new parts as preventative maintenance, happy to help you fit them!! Smile

Should be picking the bike up tomorrow ... so just sorted the insurance!!

I guess the WR is fairly nickable ... so guess how much it cost*! Shocked

*Mid 30s, no points or claims, licence for forever BTW.

Great choice of bike, cant wait to see pics Very Happy

Do they come slightly restricted when new ? Or is that just in america ?

As for insurance...? I pay £200 for my 2005 WR.

Im 20, on a restricted license, and I've got 2 claims - one fault, one non fault ... so that dosent help !

the american ones have a 'grey wire' mod to get them to YZF spec mapping, which will release more neds, but to be honest, a 'softer' map would make it easier to ride green laning. So even if it is restricted, I'll leave it!! Wink

I have an ebike multi-bike policy ... and adding this bike on didn't cost a sausage .... not even an admin fee!! happy dayz Dance!

WR400 ... full comp = £70 Smile

Done the grey wire mod + the airbox mod + the carb body thing .... makes it more responsive and personally I think easier to ride. Exclamation

I am not sure the airbox mod is a good idea, isn't it cutting two big holes in the side???

Not heard of the carb body one, what is that all about?

It may be totally different on the nice shiny new (and I expect to have a go on this baby .. especially as I may buy one) 2007+ models .... but on my old thumper:

The airbox one is removing the snorkel at the top - doesnt let anything major in ... but breaths slightly better.
The carb one is by the cable linkage and there is a plastic 'stopper'.. which effectively stops the throttle at 3/4 ... remove this and you get full throttle Smile

Vroooom.

Collected my bike today ... one word ...

Meh! Neutral

Silkey666, it was from a stealer, but it is an 06 bike not a new one! ... I am struggling with the thought about scratching this one as it is all shiny and nice, let alone how I'd be with a BRAND new one!! Wink

I don't think my bike has a snorkel, but might do the grey wire mod (if it has it) but with an in-line switch, so I can turn it on and off, not just disconnect it. I'll also do the throttle stop!! Smile

I don't think the WR250F is 'all that' ... perhaps my expectations were too high???

The power is all up the top and not that much of it ...

It only has 5 gears and they are close ratio ...

It is stupidly 'buzzy' on the road ...

The front suspension is too hard ....

I'll do a bit more of a write-up after my tea!! Smile

And here it is:-

LOOK at the GHEY standard exhaust!! Laughing

Sounds about right for a limited capacity competition enduro bike. Just need to enter an endurance event on it and it'll probably seem amazing Smile.

Go fix your KTM (if you still have it) Razz

Yep, intend to do that in slow time/when the parts come up. I still like the idea of a stroker, so keen to get it going at some point ... I can then compare and contrast!! Smile ... I always like to have a 'spare' too, so if I break one I can use the other until the first one is fixed!! Cool

Ok, so a bit more detail on my first impressions ....

First is quite tall for pulling away ... yet top is stupidly short ... I mean doing 50mph in top and the thing is already' buzzing'!! Thumbs Down

It really doesn't like pulling at low revs - the KLR was gutless, but would happily bumble along at any RPM ... the WR seems to want to be at least over 4k (guessing 4k as no rev counter) or it is all jerky/unhappy ... with the close ratio box, that means lots of gear changes to just bumble along!! Thumbs Down

So that is the road manners, now for the dirt.

The front is a bit stiff/slow (will have a look at damping) the rear brake is stupidly sharp, ok, so it was slippy out today, but it locks up if you phart near it!! Rolling Eyes

Like with on the road, if you let the revvs drop, it bogs down ... this is irritating as if you are going through a section happily at a healthy RPM and you suddenly go through some deep mud or a water plash, slowing the bike, you HAVE to change gear mid obstacle or it won't pull/sounds horrid Shocked Thumbs Down

The stiff font end means it doesn't 'track' as nicely/comfortably as I expected/like .. that said, it is extremely capable and laps it all up. Thumbs Up

Where it does lap it up and all the power is up the top of the rev range, you (well I) just end up riding like a bit of a cnut Embarassed ... it does bring a smile lighting the rear everywhere, but it'll end in tears if I carry on like that, so don't actually like the fact it is conducive/encourages such behavior ... also with all that 'ripping up' of the lanes, it'll p1ss joe-public off. Tut Tut

The front brake for some reason doesn't have a brake light switch??? I don't think mine is broken/missing, I just can't see where one goes .... its bog-stock too, so its not like it has been removed. I might fit a banjo job.

The speedo is in KMH, with a MPH inner ring ... and it is hideously inaccurate (according to my sat nav). For example, I am talking showing 40mph on the clock and sat-nav speed is ~31mph; 50mph on the clock is not even 40 on the sat-nav ....

It kickstarts really easily, no idea why the decompresser is there, you don't need it! EDIT: just reading the manual ... it is a hot-start leaver, not a decompressor!! Embarassed

The electric start will be a godsend at times I am sure ... not that I got to use it much on my maiden ride as the battery went pfffttttt after the first 20 miles!! Evil or Very Mad

As I got it from a stealers, I simply took it back and they gave me a new battery - no quibbles, but it was still a PITA as I was just getting into laning and had to about face and ride back ... also the fact I had a problem so early, put a real downer on my new purchase. Crying or Very sad

Nice bike Thumbs Up

I was in tears brushing it against bushes/brambles/branches today!! ... I slowed right down ... on the KLR I wouldn't have given a stuff* and kept going!!! Embarassed God knows what I'll be like first time I drop it!! Shocked

*and that is one of the things I loved about it!!
