Basically, how do i go about changing my tax code? I am currently on a BR tax code since starting a bank work job back in may.

I know that my last tax code when i worked in a pub was 602L or something like that.

Just getting a bit annoyed at paying £250 tax on a poor wage every month.

You could try talking to your HR person and ask them or get your line manager to look into it. Failing that I don't know if it'd be possible to phone up the tax man and explain your problem.

I've been there a few years ago, here is a timeline:

Day 1: Get overtaxed
Day 2: Tell manager, manager says "I'll sort it out with the tax office".
Day 30: Ask manager about it, "Oh yeah, turns out it's not an internal issue, talk to Revenue and Customs".
Day 31: Go into local HM R&C office, get told they can't deal with it but "We have phones over there you can talk to the blokes that deal with it" (ooooh magic, phones!). Talk to bloke who tells you which form you need.
Day 40: Finally receive form, read over sections, realise it's not the right one. Question why the form you need can't be found on the Gubmint website.
Day 50: Receive proper form. Send proper form away.
Day 140 (seriously R&C had a 90 day backlog of mail): Receive letter saying form was filled in incorrectly and needs approval from your employers' tax office.
Day 141: Return letter back with arsey reply about how you no longer work at that place, you have grown a full beard and donned a tinfoil hat, there is a new government in power and just PLEASE, GIMME MY GODDANG MONIES.
Day 231: Receive big tasty check in the mail, cash check and spend on hookers and blow.
Day 232: Get overtaxed at new job.

Yep, Im still in the situation that Muzza was in, however mine stretches to 2 and a half years, and still no money back as yet, my last etter has been in a backlog of mail for about 2 months.

This is after endless calls, letters, aggression, letters from the old company telling the tax office they are wrong and providing written evidence to prove it etc etc etc.

Getting blood out of a stone would actually be easier I think.

Im told I will have a reply in November now, so we shall wait and see, it's only £300 as well for fucks sake.


The parasitic leeching bastards are quick to take the money away, but should you dare to try and get it back they make it damn hard and so long winded that I bet a lot of people give up in the end. I had a friend who worked for the tax office and she said that the amount of people who are overtaxed is unbelieveable and that everyone should check their records at least every 5 years because chances are you'll recieve a nice tidy packet.

Anyways, I know this isn't much help, however just warning you that its most lkely that you are in a for a long ride, so might as well start the ball rolling now, this way you should recieve a nice lump sum just in time for the new console that comes out christmas 2013.

£300 is still well worth hassling the hell out of them, but i was due 1750 by the time they sorted it out! Bet that made them weep. Also dont forget its not just BR tax codes, if you only work the first part of a tax year, and get laid off or quit, you are due some back as you have paid more than necessary.

I think its disgusting that it takes so long! The £275 i'll get taxed next month could pay half next years holiday off.

Leaching bastards.

Have to speak to HR see if they can sort it, don't know why it such a long winded process to change the code to the right one.

I've never suffered from the problems you lot seem to have had. I've had 3-4 tax rebates. The first one was a slight pain when the guy at the tax office* took a dislike to me and my 'estimated' calculation of what they owed me - he came out with a grumpy "we don't estimate here sonny" and went on to explain how I'd probably done it wrong. My response included the fact that I had 2 maths GCSEs, 2 maths A levels and had just completed the maths component of my computers degree along with the explanation that my estimate was +/- 5%. It got him to calculate it there and then (all on computer) I just loved taking the cheque (which ended up being ~1% off my estimate) off the smug bastard.

Other than that though I've just rung up the tax office and HR and they've sorted it within a few weeks:

Go and see HR or Payroll ask for a P46 form, complete it and ask them to send to your tax office (who payroll will deal with and send items to reguarly and know the correct tax reference which is also on your payslip...or at least should be.

Once you have sent that off, Mr Taxman will work out how many jobs you are doing etc etc and should put you on the normal code.
