Hi All

im looking to buy a full tinted visor for my shark helmet. I know they are illegal and are for track use but i see so many bikers with these on the road.

My question to you is, do you own one and have you had any trouble from the authorites i.e fined, insurance voided, pulled over etc

Hi

Use them occasionally and never had any problems like that. Suspect 99% of the time people get away with it.

However they are illegal to use on the road so something that can be used as an excuse for giving you hassle, or to give you a fine when they can't think of anything else to do you for.

All the best

Keith

Ridden this entire year with a full black visor on my shoei with no trouble. Even when I came off in my crash the police said nothing about it but I am aware that a lot of the time it depends on where you are riding and what the ruling is from the police in that area.

Only other thing they may do is if they pull you for some other issue like a small plate or speeding they may use it as another reason to pull you up on and in magistrates perhaps....

Agree with keith though, 99% of the time probably no issue.

I currently have the black track only visor on my RSR2 Carbon and have not had any issues - its damn dark in there though! Very Happy I can only get away with wearing that visor on decent days.

Honestly though I can see why they are not legal for road use as even during the day going through shaded areas does impair your sight a lot but as has been said a lot of people get away with then generally.

leigh Very Happy

Yeah but pure black looks soooo sexah! Very Happy

PLUS I have never been looked at so nervously by passers by than wear I wear the dark visor, tinted dont even cut the mustard - but when I wear the dark one you can see people looking nervously at you to try and make eye contact, very funny indeed.

cheers

leigh Smile

i dont even know where my clear visors are its been that long since iv'e used them. iv'e used my black visors for near enough 2 years straight. i even ride with them at night, well on my shark helmet as the tint isnt as strong as my marushin helmet.

i've been pulled over once, at 1am, black visor down, cops just pulled me over to tell me my brake lights were out. they ddnt even care about the visor.

of course if your doing a wheelie and killing kittens they will get you into trouble for it.

I have a silver irridium smoked visor but it's not fully reflective. You can see in it if the lights not shining directly off it. Where can I get a fully blacked out visor?

Also, never had a problem with that, just pop it off with the clear one for night.

The police can only prosecute you if they can catch you ! Thumbs Up

In all honesty though, had mine for about a year now and never had a single problem with the law with it before.

However I have taken it off recently because its dark too early now and you can't see a fucking thing when its dark. Value my safety too much.

Iridium is only for those stuck in a 1990's timewarp, or who look at the shellsuit colour schemes of many Kawacrappys (of a certain vintage) and think 'Mmmmm, that looks nice'.

Get black.

Blaaaaack.

Blaaaaaaaaack.

Black like the crows who come to peck out our eyes.

So, they didn't mind that you're only 15 and shouldn't be on the roads? I thought they might be more concerned over that than a tinted visor.

Or, was this another one of your dreams(like the velcrow [sic] numberplate)?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a dark visor too but still not sure Rolling Eyes

I've always worn clear visors, as I can see in all light without the hassle of changing it for the dark etc.

I did get a Pinlock ready visor for my AGV Ti-Tech recently though so I could use the different coloured inserts etc, just a bit more practical for me though.

Ahhh Streethawk.... Not seen that in years.

Black visors, like race exhausts are currently illegal, however the Police have been issued guidance by the Association of Chief Constables not to worry about them.

If you are out at night swap it for a clear one or ride with it up.

I've been using a black visor for about 6 years and never a problem. I'd rather have the black visor than skwint (sp) at the sun. People wear sunglasses in their helmets (same as visor), people wear sunglasses in a car (same as black visor) so I personally don't see a problem.

ive had a black visor on my second helmet and never had a problem with police. hated wearing it at night tho for obvious reasons.

Arrow just wondering what a silver iridium visor would be like at night? anyone use one without too serious vision hinderance?

I'm curious as to know what actually makes these illegal? Is it being unable to change the visor to a clear one at night? I have one of those caberg lids with the flip down sun visor thingy. I love it but I would appreciate it being a lot darker on certain days.

Hi

Any protective eye wear must meet the relevant standards. The standards include scratch resistance and how much light it can transmit. This counts out anything more than a nominal tint.

The ones with the inner dark visor are legal because the inner visor isn't counted as the protective shield.

All the best

Keith

I understood from comments here and comments I have 'heard' a policeman make that the theory behind illegal visors was that with a sudden change of light you can't see.
While this now makes sense to excuse the flip down tinted bits, sunglasses still require a stop.
This goes along with the fact tinted windscreens are illegal even in daylight. (and I imagine actually enforced).

Lol eclipse basically.
