I'm writing an A level biology report and I've chosen to investigate the effectiveness of acid neutralisers I.E Gaviscon, rennie.

Atm I'm trying to decide if the sodium alginate in Gaviscon that produces a protective raft is enough to make up for its (experimentally proven) mediocre acid neutralising ability.

Have you used a couple different things and found gaviscon better/worse than others?

Let me know your views.

Much appreciated.

I used to use Rennie that did the job well.

However I found changing my diet proved more successful. Thumbs Up

I loathe the creamy jizz that is Gaviscon, both liquid and tablet form. If Tums don't work, I'll use Andrews Liver Salts.

I have a picture of dissolved gaviscon and it does look rather like jizz....

I just use the cheap supermarket own brand pills, calcium carbonate is calcium carbonate no matter the label or cost.

I do hope you mention the jizzyness of Galvaston in your thesis.

I've got that picture with the first sentence being "The suspicious looking white goo resting atop the water in the glass is sodium alginate"

I'll try to subtly make it a tad more suggestive.

and yes calcium carbonate is calcium carbonate. The tesco value ones are 300mg, Tums are 500mg. Rennie has 680mg with some magnesium carbonate thrown in. All in all they are a much of a muchness.

Still if the whole thing gets me some decent marks I'll be happy.

During her last 2 pregnancies, MrsGixer has bought so much feckin' Gaviscon that i'm contemplating buying shares in the company!

Strangely, during her most recent pregnancy, she could only stomach* the tablets and not the liquid, but during her previous pregnancy she only wanted the liquid, and not the tablets.

Wimmin - can't live with them, can't legally kill them either.

*see what i did there?

@ whosethedaddy: I am planning to discuss the use of h2 antagonists and PPIs versus standard antacids. I'll also go into lifestyle changes and such.

Gaviscon is useless for anyone suffering continuous heartburn, the inhibitors are a godsend. They reduce the acid production and allow the stomach to repair itself. I suffered heartburn for years until it got so bad I went to the GP and got prescribed these. Three courses and I never suffer any pains now.

Rennie will kill it if it isn't happening all the time, if it is just something you have eaten.

Gaviscon tablets when the heartburn and acid is so bad it feels like a heart attack (shooting pain through chest and even makes my back teeth hurt). Usually comes on when I lie down at night and will keep me awake all night. However two Gaviscon tablets and okay in 30 minutes.

Went to the doc and he said try drinking a can of Coke and burping hmmm.
