Some people are just borne with a few screws missing, most others have their character/demeanor shaped depending on sort of life they lead.

I was thinking something similar the other day. I'm always astonished by the amount of people I see or meet who just seem mental/weird, I'm not talking about people with mental disabilities but people who are considered normal doing very odd things! But then I guess those odd things to them are normal?

What is insane to some, might not be insane to others though.

Everyone must have triggers, but it depends on how we can deal with them and if we can carry on in normality or it if affects us negatively leading to mh problems...

i try not to think of these things because its a bottomless pit there is no answer...the motivation of this thread is there following:

https://www.theync.com/media.php?name=10121-extremely-shocking

i have posted animal slaughter before and back then it was a case of "what a bunch of cunts" was angry at the people and it pretty much slips away and is forgotten about within a short amount of time.

now since i have stopped eating meat (bazza fuck off Laughing Laughing) the way i see things has changed, i did not stop due to animal cruelty i stopped because from experimenting i feel better without it.

my thought process in some areas has changed, whilst watching that video ( a friend linked me curiosity killed the cat) the first thing that came to mind was how much i would enjoy reaaaaaally hurting those people..then i clicked that makes me much like them.

could i be like them? if i was bought up and my family ate one dog per week could i slaughter it in that way without feeling a thing?

if the conditioning was there from a young age,the answer is yes.
there have been times in which human life meant nothing to me and i regret my time there, this world clearly has a taking of life theme..in my experience i would say its down to an unconsiousness of what the person is actually doing..

there is no answer me being me would like to know what causes it though, it does not upset me in the sense i am going to go out and save the world because i cant i just don't fucking get it,why not shoot it?-rant over Laughing

Mental health is a huge subject, Im studying it at uni and leave each day with more unanswered questions!!

The basis is, what does mental health actually mean? Focus is now moving on to well-being, but again what does this mean?

Like all areas of nursing, mh is supposed to be an evidence based and individualised approach...but there are so many different reports out there, and also that if person A had a mh problem, be it a chemical imbalance or an over-whelming stressor or lack of control, then they may not be able to function in everyday life. However, person B might have the exact same imbalance or stressor, and be able to function fine.

Then it comes down to childhood experiences. CBT is an approach that focuses on changing how a person thinks and therefore behaves in a certain situation even if strong core beliefs are evident, but other approaches/models will do the opposite, yet still work for that person.

Nature vs nurture...are we born mentally ill or we become it due to the environment? Similarly, there is a high incidence of mental illness in lower classes, so does poverty make them mentally ill or did the predisposing illness cause them to be in poverty? Different approaches will have different answers...rant over Smile

maybe im using the wrong words mental health by text book, society's definitions of insane thats not what i am getting at here..

a lion killing something to survive is not insane, the slaughter house worker that slashes 1000 throats per shift is insane (society calls it efficient)

the scientist that created the atomic baboom is insane, the general who sends 100.000 abroad to slaughter due to the words of those in paraliment is insane as is the banker that finances it...the logger cutting down the earths lungs in return for the earths lungs in small thin pieces with a face on it is insane, the people who buy the books with words written on it are insane..basically we are all fucking insane every single one of us Laughing

there was a time man viewed his environment as self there for never invented chain saw decapitated it and wiped his ass with it..but hey you would"t have a bike if this wasent the case..the way things are are not one individuals fault, its an evolution that went a bit "twang!"

interesting anyway..yea Laughing

Person B is good at acting to themselves and others. Will person B become like person A if they realise it is all an act?

Not sure about that (even ignoring inbreeding in certain aristocratic circles), as not sure that wealth alone makes you happy rather than just means you are more comfortable while being unhappy.

Hear that quite a lot, but no one seems to be able to elaborate on it. When was this imbalance tested and found? The drugs used affect the neurotransmitters and chemicals in the brain like serotonin and norepinephrine, but when was it actually proved that that is the problem?

It's a broad generalisation Keith. In general, not having enough money to eat adequately leads to stress...not enough to pay the bills...buy clothes of a sufficient quality that you are warm/achieve visual status...etc.

Maybe, but how much of the population really have that stress thrust on them, opposed to how many chose to spend money on other things instead. Eg, the choice of branded clothes for visual status rather than something just as effective at keeping you warm for a fraction of the price.

Hetzer wrote:

Not sure which is more important.

Also not sure if having the money to have what you want gives you the time to realise how little what you want actually matters.

Think it is all way more complicated than lack of money = unhappy, money = happy. Might well be true for some, but I doubt for anything like all (although many would think that they would be happier with a bit more money).

For example, the UK is comparatively a fairly rich country. People here have a fair amount of money compared to most other countries. Few really have very little money. Yet we are a miserable bunch. Is that because we spend too much time desperate for more money to buy more toys, without stopping to think if those toys actually make us happier.

Maybe it is expectations measured against what people have, rather than purely what people do have.

There was a survey about happiness between countries not long ago:-

https://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/aug2008/gb20080820_874593.htm

Possible that the pursuit of wealth contributes to making people unhappy, and that those who have money but have no desperate wish for more are in a position to pursue what makes them happy.

Sorry, rambling a bit because I am not sure there is a real pattern. Too many contradictions.

All the best

Keith

I agree with this, its funny that it also seems to be the sort of state that many religions try to aim for.... Once you gain your mental freedom (nirvana, whatever) the physical world may well cease to be important as you see through all the basic physical needs as just what they are....basic needs/wants. Once you no longer hold the physical relevant, why would you abide by its rules and conventions? Thus, at least to an outsider, you would probably appear insane!

I'm of the opinion that I'm probably quite mental and probs have the signs of a fair few mental "diseases".... However I'm also of the opinion that all of us have these different discrepancies and are all pretty mental albeit in differing ways...

I've had extensive discussions with a good mate of mine who aspires to mental illness (nothing would please him more) on the subject of madness.

We boiled it down to this. You are only mad if it the way you behave causes you a problem.

Some people carry on in a way that would appear to another person like they are howling at the moon. If they have sucessfully managed to incorporate this behaviour into their life in such a way as they function with and around it without any apparent problem, they are as sane as the next man. If this behaviour causes them a problem, they are insane.

So say you feel compelled (for sake of argument) to touch your nose six times before walking through a doorway. If you are totally happy with doing this, feel it is normal and manage to carry out your daily life while doing so, you are normal. If doing so makes you feel uneasy and gets in the way but you can't stop yourself from doing it, you are mad.

nature and the universe seem cruel, only the strong can survive and only humans have sympathy for weakness because we our selves are weak.it is through human weakness that we try to place conditions on life which in truth has no conditions,as well as hell on earth which is just a manifestation of our own unconsiousness towards our lives.

done.

Exactly. It's not them that have the problem. It's us that have a problem with them. As far as they are concerned, they do not have a mental health problem and are perfectly happy.

I think a solid definition of insane is needed.... Of course thats the very problem we face....

Insane or mad to me is different from other "mental" problems.....

For instance being insane and depression are both considered mental health problems but the depressed guy could still be sane whereas the insane guy could be perfectly normal, just fuckin nuts....

Is there a medical term for generic insanity? Not with any particulars such as hearing/seeing things or whatever, ie just plain crazy and thats it?

Also I think insanity could be quite easy to manufacture. Take a normal person and put them in an asylum, constantly tell them they have problems XYZ and I'm pretty sure they will soon go nuts, even if they were ok before they went in...

I think a lot of types of behaviour that get considered a problem, and then get labeled as type of illness called 'mental illness', arent an illness at all.

Someone who develops patterns of behaviour that mean they get their own way, will tend towards sociopathic behaviour. They may well feel confidant and happy as they are in control of their world.

Someone who is used to being other peoples football, will learn patterns of behaviour where they become introverted and reduce harm to themselves by keeping themselves to themselves, and generally being 'depressed'.

So mental states are not something to be treated, they are a reaction to environment. Not necessarily a bad reaction either.

Wild mood swings, are a dominance thing. Happy euphoric moods, dark raging vengeful moods, can all be turned against other people to influence them to do what you want. Not consciously but unconsciously.

How is it that most women are dominant in their relationships while being physically weaker ? The power of mood swings.

This is the crux of the problem with mental health in this country, and why I don't neccesarily subscribe to people seeking help for mental health issues. Say any of the right keywords to the doc, and you are labelled with mental health problems. I think it's even a paper questionnaire now for fucks sake.

This doesn't mean for a minute that you might actually receive the relevant help you need.

To the OP, no I don't understand it. I hope vaguely that one day I don't have to wake up. That'd do.

I agree, in the mental health branch we no longer use the words insane or mad- they are meaningless. Generally, its the condition that they have been diagnoses or 'psychosis'. It they are hearing voices or similar, they are delusional, but this isnt a diagnosis in itself only a symptom.

The history behind mental health is disgusting really, thankfully they have dont away with the asylums and they are now just secure wards!! The treatments they used to give were horrific eg inducing an insulin coma 6 days a week for 50 or 60 sessions. A lot of the care around MH is in the community now, which is good really as it must be terrible to be surrounded by people a lot worse than you are.

they did away with asylums, and replaced them with secure wards like PICU and HDU, one day they might change those to be non shitty places, although that's quite unlikely. It'd be appropriate if staff had to stay on a ward as a patient, then wards might actually change for the better.

Insulin induced coma sounds about as nice as ECT which is still used.

Care in the community isn't good, that's proven by the number of people murdered by psyciatric patients every year. CTOs are meant to fix that, but they don't.

It's not just a cup of tea... it's a chat about EastEnders... it's laughing at a joke...it's listening to a story... it's noticing the track marks on her arm... it's asking why she does it... it's hearing how she pays for it... it's believing her when she says she wants to get clean... it's the moment you ask a 16-year-old girl for a freebie in exchange for moving her up the housing list.

Community care. Making a difference.

lol I know they still do the rather contraversial ect, I have seen it done and seen the benefits and side effects from it.

Mental illness is so individual for each person who experiences them. But surely anyone could say the same thing about people/staff staying on their general wards too.

The media blows most incidents with mental health patients out of proportion. Just because someone has a mental health problem, doesnt mean they will be violent...it may just be another factor.

People get different things out of community care, some benefit more from being at home, others dont. I have worked in the community, with older adults, and my next placement is in a PICU so I look forward to seeing how much difference is actually made.

In my opinion mh is way behind where it should be, but by 2020 maybe some of the new horizons consultation will be in place and working like it should be. I can only hope!!
