What do people on here call "being in a high gear" would that be 1st or 6th?

I know people that say both.

Personally i call 1st a "low gear" and 6th a "high gear"

Hi

I would agree with you (and I think most would). 1st = low gear, 6th = high gear.

All the best

Keith

Highway code would also agree with you;

231

Drive extremely carefully when the roads are icy. Avoid sudden actions as these could cause loss of control. You should

* drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible; accelerate and brake very gently

I doubt somehow they'd be advising you to drive/ride in 1st Very Happy

Low gear = high ratio and vice versa, so you are correct.

Smaller numbers are usually lower than higher ones.

I think that's where he got confused. I don't think anyone calls first a high gear.

On my push bike I remember always ever calling 1st the "highest gear"... but I do know that I was thinking about ratios. On my motorbike 1st is definitely a low gear though.

I wonder what motorbiking would be like if you had two sets of gears, just like a mountain bike... Way more control over torque vs speed I imagine.

If you came first in a race you would be higher than those finishing lower in the running field. Laughing

First is a low gear. It always has been and always will be.

Whoever says 1st is a high gear is very strange.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
