Id like to know what most people do to get around the race can issue! I mean if you fit a non road legal silencer, its a problem, as if you want to declare it to the insurance company, as most of them seem to refuse cover on a bike with a non road legal part fitted. The bike is technically unroadworthy, so what do you do? Does anyone find that their insurance company is willing to cover them if you fit a race can/system, and if not is the best option just not to tell them in the first place?

Don't think there is one single company that is best, different companies specialise in different areas.
For example some are better for young riders on powerful bikes, some are good for young riders on less powerful bikes and so on.

A list of competitive mainland companies that cover Northern Ireland would be useful as they ask you what you had for breakfast then 10 minutes later when you give them your post code they can't quote you! Thumbs Down

Courtesy of T.C.

The fitting of a race can is very much down to the individual insurance company to decide as to whether they will continue to cover or whether it is null and void.

There are a number of issues here.

Firstly, if a race can is fitted and the insurers are not advised, they can use the loophole of a breach of contract to avoid continuing with cover.

Secondly, the fact that it has in loose terms been modified means that the bike may not conform to type approval regulations and that is also another get out clause for them.

And thirdly, if it is illegal, by the strict letter of the law it ceases to be road legal both in terms of the construction and use regs and MOT regs so that would be a get out for them as well.

So the only advice I can offer is that riders who are looking to fit a race can should confirm with their insurers that cover will continue and then get it conformed in writing as it is not unusual for someone to pass the buck at a later date and say that the cover is not in force if there is a piece of paper confirming it.

This of course would not preclude someone making a claim under a no win no fee arrangement (CFA) providing the chances of being successful are better than 50/50 as the insurance cover taken out on the individual will pay all legal fees and compensation in the event that the case is lost and has no bearing on their road risk cover.

In Ireland I'll have to pay €1800 comprehensive on a '04 NSR125, at 19 with 3 years ncb and a full license... Are there any english companies that are willing 2 insure overseas? I tried 2 get a quote for an R6 before and I was told €12500 TPO and have a nice day... On any 400 apart from a BROS400 I can't get quoted any less than €6000 TPO.... I really wanna upgrade in d near future

Yup you can get them to change the bike you are covered on, and depending on what you're covered on currently and what you want to change to they will charge you or give you a refund. Smile They probably also take into account how much of your policy is left as well.

Just ring them up and ask for a quote to change your policy over to an NSR and they'll tell you how much they want for it. Thumbs Up

Just a quick question. When insured on L plates do you still get no claims bonus? I'm guessing you do but i'm not sure.

Danny, I think a guide on what increases/ decreases quotes would be handy. For example, don't some companies give a discount for high mileage (because you get more experience riding), while others charge more (because you're on the road for longer and therefore more likely to be in an accident)?

Yes you still get NCB when on L plates.

Almost everything you tell an insurance company affects your premium.

I'll try and make a comprehensive list of how various things affect your premium, won't be for a while yet though.
