What licence do you have?

The only restrictions are on the use of motorways as far as I'm aware and you can't go on these without a full licence and a bike that has a certain cc, 125 I think!

Motorways, Full licence holders only (Passed your test restricted or not).

A roads, L platers and full licence holders.

B roads, L platers and full licence holders.

Private roads, Anyone.

Anyone with a license (provisional or full) can go on A & B roads.

For motorways you have to have a full license and no bikes under 50cc.

Although I would say that some B roads are definitely not recommended if you are unable to reach the speed of the general flow of traffic. You'll be overtaken an awful lot which can be very dangerous.

E.G. in the same way you shouldn't ever go on an A road with a 30MPH ped Thumbs Up

Some of the B roads near me has constant 50MPH traffic on it.

What? I've seen people do this. It's dangerous.

So what's your opinion of mobility scooters going a speed of 8mph on most roads inc. dual carriage ways? Very Happy

i'm afraid i would have to agree that going 30mph on a busy A-road is dangerous. two of my mates were involved in a collision because they were going to slow for cars pulling off of a slip road onto the main carriageway.
ask c_dug on here as he was one of the people involved.
(not saying that i wouldn't go on an A-road on a 30mph, just saying that it is dangerous)

Why exactly??

I think you should perhaps look at google maps, and see what class roads are local to you. You may be surprised at how many of them are 'A roads'.
Then I would definitely recommend reading the highway code - for someone who has been riding a 125 for a year and half, you don't come across as knowing very much.

You seem to be giving out quite a bit of false information at the moment, what with this little gem, and the comment about a restricted 250cc on a CBT.

I've emboldened the IMPORTANT part of your comment. And yes, I agree it CAN be dangerous on certain A roads.
Not all 'A roads' are dual carriageways. Quite a few, around here especially, are bus routes and a lot have a 30MPH speed limit with the occasional 40 or 60 section.

I refer you to above, check google maps/earth.

My ex Father-In-Law turned up here to collect his grandchildren and declared that he was annoyed with a scooter rider. He told me that scooter riders should ride right in by the kerb so that cars could get past them.
Are you agreeing with this too??

Anyhow. We don't even know what TYPE of licence the OP has.

lozzypop1, I completely agree with you. I didn't mean to give out that misinformation of engine size not mattering on just a CBT. I was however told that by someone with a full bike licence which is why I trusted them, as it turns out now I shouldn't have.

Also I know what you're saying... A roads are EVERYWHERE. Half the roads in my town are 30MPH speed limit residential A roads probably.

What I was talking about are NSL roads and I know that I should have clarified that earlier. What I mean is - look at a road map of the UK. All of the green A roads you see there (the NSL ones) are the ones that would be death on a ped mostly. Same with those B roads that connect towns and villages where traffic moves rather quickly.

I don't claim to know more than an average person, I just enjoy trying to contribute to discussion. The more I do, the more I end up learning as well as I am corrected or affirmed. Also, the occasional pieces of information that I have gotten wrong I don't think points to me not knowing very much as far as riding experience is concerned on the roads. The last one and a half years on the road have been amazing for me. I push myself up to the current limit of my abilities and always try to be better and better, experimenting and practising the fine details of control like any biker who loves riding should be doing. Obviously I'm still on the journey to getting to where I want to get to.

Finally, lol at the 8MPH mobility scooter on that road Laughing

I would suggest to read up on the Highway Code and Roads Signs and other literature to add to your knowledge. It may help you and stop you from being caught out.

While I agree this is a fantastic idea, I don't think I am caught out as such here, rather just not specific enough with my replies. Knowing the speed limit is also definitely very, very important. If your bike can't reach it then I wouldn't recommend travelling on that road.

Hmm, it's time to read some more theory for me actually. Reading can be a big area of laziness for me but I am aiming for a full licence soon. It's the figures like stopping distances that annoy me, having to memorise them. I like to think that I am aware of my stopping distance now on the road from memory and experience, but I'm someone who couldn't take a figure like 40M and apply it to knowing how far that is on the road at all - for the moment, and therefore kind of unhelpful.

Yet these roads are inhabited by cyclists, many who would be more than happy to do 30 mph.....

The problem is not the peds. Its the other road users who have a lack of road awareness.
Hope the police ensured the drivers were charged with due care and attention at the very least. Or dangerous driving....

Mmm, better ban cars from town centre's where bike's filter then Laughing

iooi, I could only argue that cyclists are less wide than a moped and that a motorbike filtering past cars is far safer than a car attempting the same Shocked

Not sure that they are great arguments really, just my opinion.

Thought the widest part of either would be the person (were they both ridden by the same average sized bloke.)

Obviously, If the cycle was being ridden by someone of a more 'whippet-like' physique this may not apply. Laughing

When I had a restricted 'ped, I still frequented NSL roads, there's not much to worry about, though it could be seen as more dangerous compared to keeping up with the traffic.
