So is it really worth it, does it actually do what is says on the tin? I get the impression it only protects your NCB with the company you are insured with and if you left them and went somewhere else they would just see you had an accident on xx/xx/xx and your protected NCB would count for nothing.

I had a light spill a few months back and decided not to go through insurance as I did not want to loose my 5 years NCB and had an excesses of £500. Now it looks like if I want to get my bike back to it's previous condition I would need to spend over and around £1000...

So I'm left with 3 options:

-Cut my losses and sell the bike as damaged.
-Make a claim (I would just say I dropped the bike coming out of my driveway).
-Repair and sell the bike.

I'm just a bit paranoid about how much an insurance claim would affect my insurance, running a bike costs enough as it is!

Cheers

Hi

Nothing to stop them loading your policy in the event of a claim anyway, even if you keep your no claims.

All the best

From what I've gathered you're normally allowed to claim twice on a 1 year policy and on the third you lose your NCB.

So if you moved companies they'd still send the new company proof of NCB, but you'd still have to declare the accident.

Have you got a list of damage to the Mille? Tried people on rsvzone for second hand parts?

Protected no claims does exactly what it says on the tin - If you claim you don't lose any of your no claims discount if you should need to make a claim on that policy.

BUT - When the policy is up for renewal you will have to declare that you have made a claim and thus the premium will almost certainly rise because you have statistically become a greater risk. So what you gain on the one hand (ie no loss of no claims) you lose on the other.

As for how making a claim in general works - if you do have to make a claim and say you have an unprotected five years no claims discount for example, you won't generally lose all of those five years worth. You will normally only lose a percentage of it (probably two years worth), so you won't end up back right at square one.

As stated above, stepback for a claim is 2 yrs. 5 yrs to 3, 9 yrs to 3(anything 5+ yrs is usually treated as max and steps back to 3 <50%>)

Max NCB usually gives a 65% discount (some companies profess to give you more, but in reality they just load the premium and it works out the same). You pay an additional premium to protect the NCB. It allows 2 claims to be made without reducing your 65% discount. However your initial risk premium will increase due to the claim.

Whether or not you claim is down to your excess & cost of repair.

Do an online quote to see how much you premium will increase if you did claim (if at all).

You might find claiming makes no difference (especially if you drop the protected off on the renewal.)
