NASA are getting ready to test the biggest rocket since the Saturn V. The launch window starts at noon today and whilst the weather's not looking brilliant, they only need a 15 min gap to light the candle.

Is there a purpose for it other than America showing the world how big it's dick is?

It's the replacement for the shuttle. You can argue all night long over whether there are benefits to putting people in space or not, but a lot of Americans are certainly unhappy about the prospect of the only way to get to the ISS being via a Russian rocket (once the Shuttle fleet retires in the next couple of years).

It's also part of the Constellation program, which intends go get people back to the moon (eventually). There are people that reckon mining the moon will be the answer to a lot of the Earth's energy problems... and that the moon should be used as a staging post for exploring further, eg. Mars.

It may be willy-waving, but the US spend a lot more money doing that on earth than off it.

Just been announced that launch time is 9:20am for the countdown, so it's 1:20pm our time, weather is "green" at the moment.

Delayed due to triboelectrification, waiting for an ETA on the go box.

For a 2 minute flight time, I think I'll just watch the rerun and go out now.

I just don't want to miss any good explosions.

Like Bendy said, it's effectively static generation.

As the rocket flies through high level cloud it would generate p(precipitation) static which would prevent certain data and controls etc sent via. radio signals reaching or leaving the rocket which could be a disaster.

I think launch is scheduled for 14:50 GMT.

Going to try to begin countdown at 3:15pm GMT, expecting launch at 3:19pm.

I can't believe they are complaining about the weather, try and launch that rocket over in England you complacent fucks.

They have given up for today. Why don't they just go when everybody says that they are "green"?

That means they are green for launch at that precise moment, they need to be 'green' for an entire 15 minute window to allow the launch to occur.

If you look at Merritt Island (where they are) on the Satellite weather imagery you can see it's very hit and miss, clouds all over the place.
