Hi, if your not the registered keeper or legal owner of a bike. How do you insure it? For example My dad has a spare bike that I can use, however quotes won't touch me because im neither of the above?

You might be better off ringing for a quote.

Or ask dad nicely and transfer ownership Wink

You should be able to insure a bike that isn't yours, it's not a situation which is very unusual. I've insured a bike that wasn't mine, no problems with the insurance company. Have they said why they won't insure you? Confused

Have you tried saying that it's a bike you're borrowing from your dad, rather than saying it's a bike that you're not the registered keeper or the legal owner?

Is the bike already insured through your dad. Not sure they like anything double insured. Just a thought.

the bike isn't insured at all just standing to be used shortly. I can't see the problem myself as its with permission from the owner.

Are you doing online quote or ringing up? Online ones are often a bit fickle.
There's now a few short term insurance sites that are aimed at people insuring other people's vehicles, so it's definitely not an issue (and, as Ste mentioned it generally shouldn't be an issue anyway.)

The standard rule they work to is that you must have an insurable interest. The reason for this is so you don't insure some random car etc then smash it up. Its all down to not being able to profit from a claim.

There are some companies which will insure you, most won't as you have found out.

You could insure in your dads name with you being the main rider, or ask if you can be policy holder with the RK as named, shows you at least know the RK.

Alternatively say you are the RK, but just delay sending the V5 off unless you need to Wink

When I buy a bike off ebay, I do the insurance before collecting (and paying). Never had a problem with it. I am sure ebike and quinndirect doesn't ask for V5.

Ebike actually offer it as a 'feature' that you can insure other people's bikes easily with their system - that's their excuse for not offering 3rd party insurance on other bikes.
