ive had a look at some realy nice bikes on preloved . com but all of them are de-restricted. i know theres an old debate about wether its worth getting it done so i dont want to start that up. i need it restricted to get it insured. how would i go about restricting one? garage? how much? cheers

I would not bother with trying to get it restricted. When I got mine at 17 I spent a load of cash trying to do the exact opposite.

Here is a useful link going through all the things you would need to do to de-restrict the bike, so essentially you would just need to do the opposite...

My RS needed the powervalve connected up, but even after that was done it would only rev to 8,000 rpm. I took it to my very nice local garage who then took it to the local Aprilia dealer who plugged it into their 'special computer' to sort out the CDI unit and after that it ran like a dream!

Cheers. Whats the worst that can happen if i get caught unrestricted? Although thinking about it i rekon i will get a restricted one to begin with as then i know it hasnt been abused or constantly red lined

I redline restricted bikes.. im impatient.
just because its restricted doesnt mean its not been pushed hard/not looked after

A restricted RS125 puts out less power thanks to a deactivated power valve.

In no way are the revs restricted.

Chances are a restricted RS125 will have been thrashed more than a derestricted one.

Far be it from me to encourage young riders into bad ways Wink But surely no one would know so long as you rode sensibly round town and just caned it out on the open road. These days, you virtually never get pulled over (so long as you're insured, taxed, MOT'd and not doing 80mph wheelies on the pavement and the like Cool )

yeah i wont get caught as im going to ride it sensibly. but if theres an acident my insurane wont be valid if its unresticted. so if an idiot is thrshing his new firari down a country road and crashes into sensible old me then i get screwed over as i cant claim. and if it is my fault im even more screwed as i have to pay his insurance out of my pocket. i think

How would anyone know the bike was unrestricted though? I can't believe they dyno test after an accident. Unless maybe you were doing 105mph seconds before the crunch Shocked

...ride with restriction off..see how you like it/how long bike lasts..then when its rebuild time, restrict it.

dw..u cant do 120 and have a camera flash you, a car pull out on you, pick your bike up, and have a car reverse over it..all these tales are lies Wink
Try it out..you probably wont notice much difference...then again..you might do.. i dunno..only used 4 stroke 125s..

A derestricted RS, they would look at the exhaust, and when they open the bike up..they may find a rave unit...also when they take the engine apart..suddenly a lovely power valve is sitting there?

When i had my accident on a CLR125, they took that as it looked semi crosser-ish i reckon.. I had no mods done to it, but I got it back after 4 weeks, saying they were happy with it and it wasnt modified.

I understand what you mean about a restricted one not being thrashed so much, in restricted form the bike only puts around half the stress on the engine when compared to a de-restricted bike. Maybe you should broaden your search (try auto trader, mcn, gumtree, ebay etc..) and wait for a restricted bike to come up?

When I got my RS125 in restricted form it was ok for the first few weeks but I soon got bored and longed for my first car, eventually I thought it might be worth wile getting it de-restricted. I never looked back after that, the fun I had on that little screamer is what got me hooked on bikes, it was great tearing about on the little 2 stroke and in my opinion ten times the bike in restricted form. It would do a 1/4 mile in 15.8 seconds, which is the same as a Caterham 21 Supersport, Ford Focus RS and Toyota MR2 GT, sure it's not hugely fast in bike terms but at 17 I fooking loved it!

Not sure what model of RS125 it was, but unless it was one of the latest shape (which I know next to nothing about) I can't see a reason why.

The restriction doesn't affect revs, beyond having torque / power drop off at lower revs making it pointless to rev it out.

Well thinking back on it I may be slightly wrong in my description? It would rev higher but as soon as I hit 8K rpm the bike would just stop pulling and the tacho would creep up. After taking it to Aprilia and them plugging it into some machine it would rev freely all the way.

Hi

Sounds like the power valve just wasn't opening.

As far as I know on the older ones there was no diagnostic socket for anything to be plugged into.

The only real electronic "restriction" was the massive flat spot between 5k and 6k, and that needed a physical modification to the cdi unit to overcome it.

The best thing to do is not have an accident, then the problem doesn't arise Wink

i ride 50/50 offensive and defensive.. i hate junctions, but given the darker evenings when i leave work..ive swapped for the car.

well when you have ridden during the late evening where ice is infact solid on the roads and you find urself riding at no more than 10mph for the remaining 18miles of your journey...you understand a car is a damn sight warmer and confortable..especially in the minuses..

That's all part of the fun of riding. You have to ride in all weather conditions to get the full experience. There are way too many cars on the road already without motorcyclists driving the bloody things too Wink
