Hi,

Could anyone please name some cheap but good hacks about?
Looking to spend about £500 max but so far everything I find is around £900.

Using mostly for commuting work, 40 miles both ways.

Cheers.

GS500E? Mr. Green

I bought mine for £360. 2000 model, only 1 owner from new, service history, 25k, 12 months MOT, 6 months tax.

Cosmetically it is a bit scuffy mind but for a winter hack it's ideal.

Decent mpg too.

Thumbs Up

GS500E? Mr. Green

I bought mine for £650, 1997 model, 1 owner from new, service history, 18k, 12 months MOT, 1 months tax.

Cosmetically I did a respray of the frame and swingarm, but for a winter hack it's ideal.

I haven't got a clue what the MPG is, but around 160 miles to reserve for a tenner.

Thumbs Up

if you can get a 600 bandit you might get one for around 500-600 maybe, gs500 is a good hack again around 400-600 mark if you can find a few good ones

Had 2 cheap hacks now

GS500E - bought for £425

and

GPZ305 - bought for £130

Both dirt cheap to buy, run and maintain.

Been showing a few sports bike up on my GS recently by some knee down action. I love my commuter bike! Thumbs Up

Other cheap ones will be most oldish 500, i.e. ER500, GS500 CB500. all easy to get under £500.

What are you looking for? A Big commuter or a smaller CC'd one?

As mentioned above Suzuki GS, Kawasaki ER-5, Kawasaki GPZ, Yamaha Diversion.

Or on the 125's, Honda CG125, Honda City Fly, Yamaha YBR.

Stop looking for specific models and instead just search for things under a certain price point. Do some googling on the results and see what seems most suitable.

Any 250 or 300 MZ, preferably an ETZ or Saxon. Bought a 251ETZ for £70 a couple of years ago, still had a few weeks T&T on it. Straight through the MOT. Sold it on because I was running out of space in the garage Confused

K75

cheap to buy.. cheap to insure.. and cheap to maintain. Ideal for a commute and with a nice turn of speed as these were originally police bikes.

shaft drive.. 100cc of gear oil every 12,000 miles and thats it.

Also.. due to the kind of owners these bikes have had they tend to be very well looked after and any with less than a 100K on the clock can be considered 'low mileage'

Sooner or later opinions fade and the name on the tank matters not. I think that happens somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear. Enjoy the ride... everything else takes care of itself.

Ideally over 400cc+ as 125`s get abit tedious over 40 miles.

Thats what I`ve been doing but it also helps to know the reliable winter hacks about if one pops up.

I'd like to ride a GS500 again.

I used one for DAS. The engine isn't powerful, but they're compact and chassis has potential.

GPZ500 is supposed to be significantly better than the ER5(which I used to have)
