either you have a little typo there, or you're riding that NSR illegally lol what with you being 16 and all
2 strokes are noisy horrible smelly expensive things, but I'd say the price you pay is worth the smile it puts on your face
as for a cheap hack, something like a CG125 would be perfect, parts are readily available and cheap, and can achieve long over 100mpg plus with very little maintainance they last forever (my one's engine is long past 40k and is still going strong ) ____________________ '84 TS50X, '91 TZR125, '89 CBR400RR, '91 VFR400R NC30, '98 R1

I can do everything myself but it is still expensive to maintain. It gulps down fuel and two stroke oil (TTS is damn expensive!!). It just seems to cost a lot to run, I work at week ends but I do 100-150 miles a week and as I'm only 16, it's a lot out of my pocket.
Not to mention I'm constantly worrying about dropping it, which I think takes the fun out of riding it.
Sooo, I was thinking about getting a cheap 4 stroke. Something that has a lot better fuel economy, and costs very little to maintain. Something that I wouldn't be worried about dropping as it's very slippery over here in France in winter as temps are mostly below 0 in the mornings.
Would I miss the performance of my two stroke? I use mostly A roads with a lot of straights. Just how much slower are four stroke 125s vs 2 strokes? (My NSR is derestricted)
YES I'M TIGHT! |
You have a few choices. The old favourite CG125, for the terminally tight of fist - they do about 125mpg, but are dog slow.
The YBRs look quite nice but wouldn't be much easier to maintain, I fancy.
You could get an older, more sedate commuter 2 stroke, such as an RXS100, which is tough as old boots, does 70+mph, can be run using the cheapest 2 stroke oil you can find, will require virtually no maintenance ever and turn in at least 80 to the gallon, so long as you leave the motor standard.
Or perhaps go for an EN125 Suzuki (or an older GS, which I think would be preferable). I had a GS125 many years ago and it would do about 70mph, had great handling and fuel economy was excellent too. Plus they have very tough engines and can easily survive slides down the road. |

You can ride a 125 at 16 in France.

I really like the sound of this thing. Ideally I want something a bit faster than the 4 stroke 125s like the CG, but more fuel efficient and less costly than my NSR.
Are there any alternatives to the RXS 100?
Thanks. |
The RD125LC, maybe, but it's not as reliable, not as simple and much harder to find these days (although it's quicker and more sporty - though less economical too). Many RXS100s are owned by older people and not thrashed endlessly. You can still pick them up for around £300, often less, if you look around.
The RXS is immensely strong for a 2 stroke, and can withstand huge neglect combined with extremely high mileage and still keep soldiering on, which is largely why I've kept mine this past 19 years, while other bikes have come and gone. For example, in the summer of 1994 I did over 8000 miles touring round the UK and the most I had to do besides put petrol and oil in was change the plug once and put some air in the back tyre. Never missed a beat. There is nothing out there as cheap yet reliable, combining extreme simplicity with a pretty decent level of performance. |

My NSR never used that much two stroke, the RS250 was much worse. Maybe you should check the pump setting (or mine might have been lean)?
Fuel economy wasn't amazing, but isn't too bad for the performance. Could always try riding slower - which you'd forced to be with a bike with under half the power anyway.
At 125cc you're definitely going to be taking a serious hit in performance for better fuel economy from another bike.
Why not do the rings or whatever service needs doing? Shouldn't cost you too much and gives you another 10000 miles before you need to worry again .
Dropping a naked bike is still going to do a fair bit of damage, it's just you may be less worried by it.
I presume you haven't got too long until you can get a bigger bike (well, no longer than a year), on that I'd be tempted to keep it until you can ride a bigger bike, then go that way. |

I used to be able to do 130 miles off of £8 of fuel when I had mine, but then thinking about it that was 3 years ago now. Long as you look after it and don't constantly ride on the red line it should last quite a while before you need any major servicing too it, or you can abuse it like I did and spend all your money on it. ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. The DTR is a great fun bike. Not sure I'd want to use one for serious transport and I loved the one I had in the 90s. I don't remember managing to break anything, but then I didn't have it for that long
The advantages of the RD (more power, better brakes and electrics) are offset by the poor fuel economy and relative complexity compared to the RXS. Then again, the RD was (at the time) a sports bike, whereas the RXS was built to be dropped by learners and slogged to and from work by commuters
BTW, do you have a Blue X5? I had one once - one of my all time fave bikes
