"Car v bike: which is fastest? It’s the age-old debate, argued in pubs, on internet forums, among friends, in magazines and on TV. To prove two wheels are better than four forever, we’re pitching arguably the best road bike in the world against one of the best road cars, in perfect conditions at the Almeria circuit in Spain."

Oh I wonder what the write-up will say....

Bike disappearing on the straights and the car catching up under braking and cornering? Or maybe they will tell us something we don't already know? Rolling Eyes

i wouldn't exactly say that the f430 is the best car in the world but it should be interesting none the less

I'm unlikely to buy either, nor am I likely to drive or ride in perfect conditions at the Almeria circuit. Just expensive toy willy waving.

Why not by tart-factor, at which point the Ferrari is way ahead as far as the general public goes?

A decent '7', Radical or other similar focused car that suffers the lack of protection from the elements would probably leave the bike standing in a lot of cases and come in at a similar price (ok, it's a bottom of the range radical vs a top of the range caterham, but then a top of the range Radical is really quite ridiculously quick.)

Oh and the replacement for the 430 has actually got near-bike levels of acceleration off the line and presumably better elsewhere.

^^^

I'm sure 5th gear put a Radical up against a GSXR1000 and the radical whipped it by about 3 seconds round the track.
Any car like a Caterham7, Radical etc, is gonna blow any road bike (and Ferrari, Lambo, Aston for that matter) away round a tranck just with there sheer cornering speed.

Plus I think it has been proven that the 1098R is a much better bike than the Desmo round a track. So to say the Desmo is the best bike in the world doesnt ring quite true.

I'm not sure whether the Ducati is the best bike in the world...from what I've read it takes one hell of a rider to perform on one better than even a half price 1098R, not to mention a Jap 4 with £30k thrown at it.

Fifth gear did, well it was a Westfield XTR which isn't too far off. The bike was show-boating when he could have been going fast (wheelies, rear wheel steering etc.) However, they were very fair about the result, saying the car was less practical, etc, if I remember.
Seems it was 1.1 seconds faster.

Incidentally, that car is for sale I think, but with some extra aeros and a 350hp engine - think it was £25k.

The SR8LM or Ultima GTR are the 'ones to beat'.
The Ultima holds the 'unofficial' 'Top Gear lap time' (1:12.8 on road tyres) and the SR8LM the official Nurburgring time (6:48).

Can get plenty of four wheeled fun for £1500.
I'd probably go for a MX5 with some track tweaks and maybe spare wheels already. Consider welding the diff.
A 3 series BMW, or if I didn't want to include drifting in my playing, MR2s, as well well as plenty of light weight front wheel drive toys.
If you view a car as a toy rather than a shopping cart, it's quite possible to find one you can have fun in.
Though, which is a big thing for the track work too, the narrow width of a bike is perhaps one of it's biggest advantages. You can get past other vehicles on the road and on the track it means you can straighten out a lot of the corners.

I knew someone would say something like that.

Yes, old hot hatches and MX5s can be bought fairly cheap, (although demand seems to have increased) but they'll often quite worn out and you'll probably also end up having to do a lot of on-going maintenance on the car.

In my case I've nowhere to keep or work on a "fun car", but I've enough space for a bike.

A bike is much more use-able for the chap who can't afford to do track days.

A Win for the bike Thumbs Up

A lot of £1500 'fun' bikes also need a reasonable bit of on going work etc and many (not me) much prefer a car for daily use. Even though I do fine on bikes alone too, it's still nice/convenient to have something a bit bigger to do a decent sized shop, pickup parcels or people easily.

What's that got to do with the price of fish?Very Happy

FWIW, I drive a diesel Estate car when I need to carry things, but has nothing to do with having a cheap fun vehicle that I can keep out of the weather.

Because if you could afford two vehicles, your budget for one could also be higher Smile.
I drive either a LWB diesel van or a BMW M3 when I want to carry things. Either can be quite fun in the right circumstances, actually Smile and sadly neither is worth that much.
