 |
|
I need to buy my first set of tyres for my Hornet 600. I curently have BT-056's which i killed on the last track day so wont be getting those this time.
I'm confused by tyres, you get sports, sports-mileage, sports-touring, touring... What type of tyre do I want? I ride all year round and do the occasional track day. (I want a tyre that does everything! )
What do you have on your bike/would you suggest.
Specs are;
Front: 120/70 zr17 (61w) and Rear: 180/55 zr17 (73w)
Thanks

If this garage sells the tyres, I imagine they'll say "yes it does". |

you can get some cracking deals on Avon's at the minute https://www.fwr.co.uk/
check out their "packet of three offer" - £169 for one front and two rears (Jay RWH will fit and balance them for about £11 if you take loose wheels in - they know what they are doing too)
AV49/50 SPs are mighty sticky and great for all uses but the SP rear is soft and dies quickly - especially if drag racing a lot with >187bhp
however, I know loads of people who run the ST (Touring version) on Hayabusas and ZX12s and regularly get more then 5000 miles out of them and these guys are not slow in the corners either, there's more than one ex-racer amongst them
I do know that none of my "expert" friends will use Bridgestones as they rarely last more than 1000 miles ____________________ 187.3bhp = 201mph |

hmmmm
you might want to weigh up the price advantage of actually buying tyres from RWH and having them fitted, as they will probably end up charging you half an hours labour to remove the wheels if you take your own tyres
I dunno for sure but in the end, they they will probably do you a "ride-in ride-out" deal which may be not too far removed from what you will end up paying if you order the tyres mail order and go to the hassle of getting the bike and two tyres for them to fit - tyres they haven't supplied
most places like Webbs or RWH will fit tyres that they have supplied at a nominal fee for removing the wheels but of course the tyres will be more expensive - now here you pays your money you takes your choice
do you have no way of removing the wheels?
btw, there are two dealers in our town that I wouldn't trust my bike with for an instant - I'll PM you if you want my advice on them
and under no circumstances go to anyone other than a bike dealer - like ATS or Kwikfit - they are not clued up or geared up for fitting bike tyres
if I were you I would pop round to RWH (best in town) and talk to them about the best deals for ride-in, ride out
If that's gonna work out too expensive for you and you think it's worth it, I can loan you a paddock stand to get the rear off and you can easily jack the front up on a car jack and some axle stands or strap it up into the garage roof or summat - that's what I do
let me know if I can help ____________________ 187.3bhp = 201mph |

Hi
You said that you ran with BT-056's. Now I don't know anything about tyres at all (fairly recent to bikes but interested in the thread 'cos of my Hornet), but a mate of mine has an early 'blade.
I'm sure he said that the 056 had a different cross section to most tyres and was made to suit the bikes handling (something about the sidewalls being less curved). If this is right and as the Hornet has the 'blade wheels would they not be the better tyre to choose?
My mate just got best newcomer in the TT Sidecar races so I think he's a fairly reliable source (if I've got my facts right that is - prone to a bit of memory loss these days). As I said I know nowt about tyres but thought I'd stick my neb in. ____________________ '98 Hornet 600 - Tahitian Blue - 'tis very nice!!!

I've been talking to one of the guys I work with (another biker) and he has told me that his cousin owns a tyre garage in Coventry. He said he is more than happy to get me any tyres I need from there. I asked him to get me a quite for BT010/020 front/rear and also for AV49/50.
One phone call later and I'm told the Bridgestones will cost £120 for the pair (maybe less) and he'll come back to be with the price for the Avons. I'll let you know what he asks for them.
He has also said that he will get tyres for any of my mates, so once I have an established method of getting them from Coventry to my place I'll be taking orders ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |
