OK, picked this up off a fellow BCF'er for my girlfriends Christmas present. Here is how it stands at the moment;

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/vfr4002.jpg
https://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1783/img1689ir.jpg
https://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3637/img1691u.jpg

It is going to need a few thing doing to it to get it road worthy, here is my list so far;

1 - New front brake pads.
2 - New tyres, front and back.
3 - The normal service items, spark plugs, oil filter, oil, air filter and check all the fluids.
4 - New battery as a maybe, because I charged the old one and it holds charge, but not very well, might need a good day run with no lights on. I will think about this one.
5 - Choke cable - This has broken and cant see it anywhere, I will have a further look once the panels are off.
6 - Overhaul the brake callipers.
7 - The wheels are pretty stiff , so the wheel bearings may need replacing, but might just need greasing up.
8 - Also, the right hand clip on is touching the clocks when turned, so got to adjust them to make sure it does not touch anything for the full lock.
9 - Check and grease the rear suspension.

The exhaust needs a baffle, but have one spare one so that will pass the noise test on the MOT. Happy days!

Non essential items that I will change will consist of replacing/respraying the wheels in white, possibly respraying the fairings as they have a few scrapes and cuts in the paintwork. One of the mirrors is missing, needs new glass both sides really. The screen is cracked and needs replacing, one is on order Very Happy

So will start ripping stuff off this week and order parts up for the weekend and begin.

Got to get cracking on this, only 11 weeks until Christmas day. Very Happy

I had a spare hour last night after work, so I took most the plastics off to access the engine. Turns out the air filter is probably the original filter Laughing cleaned that for now, and checked the oil in the bike, way to much in there, so I will drain that all out tonight and horse some new stuff in.

I know two people who can do the paintwork. One guy paints the bikes in the superstock races. So, he'll be good. And, another guy down my road, so will find the cheapest one and get it resprayed. If the superstock chap will turn out cheaper, I will just give it to him to surprise me on the colour scheme.

That's all I did as I ran out of light. I dislike not having a garage. Thumbs Down

So that's not you in your avatar then?

OK, whilst waiting for parts been thinking what to do about a couple of things, so ordered up a new screen and tank pad.

Also, as mentioned above I needed to get some new mirrors, now, they will take a chunk out of my budget if I buy some off ebay, so I measured up the bolt distance and they turn out to be the same as my R1 mirrors. So IF they do fit, will find out tomorrow evening, I can see if they suit the bike and they will stay on there. Will post some pics up and you'll have to let me know what you think.

More to come as soon as I get my parts.

No offense taken, I am keeping the yellow, but getting rid of the lovely coloured wheels, changing them to white.

Little update:

Will get some pics up soon I promise, changed the spark plugs last night to find I will probably need new HT leads. chucked the tank back on and tried starting it. starts OK, but sometimes runs on 3 cylinders and takes a while to start. I think it is the carbs too. Got to take a proper look at them.

What else did I do last night, oh yeah! The R1 mirrors do not fit, shame, they would have looked nice.

Also, I sorted the issue of the handle bars touching the speedo. Took the front fairing off and the speedo, took Mr club hammer and tapped the frame behind the clocks a little and HEY PRESTO! We have a full turning circle without anything touching. Very Happy

Also, took trhe calipers off last night, they were binding, so stripped the whole lot apart and cleaned it up. In the process of rubbing them down from the original gold calipers and gonna try a bit of paintwork myself. Not sure what colour to go for at the moment, maybe black or even orange calipers might go with the white wheels.

Oh and I still CANNOT find where the choke cable connects to, it's driving me mad. Twisted Evil

The new battery is charged up and good to go. Topped up the engine coolant. And noticed the radiator is bent from a collision. Rolling Eyes

So will get the pics up on Saturday, and any suggestions on the calipers will help. What ya reckon?

Thumbs Up

Thanks dude, that helps the cable feed issue, just go to figure out where to connect the cable to the carbs. Got a pic from another user, but I cannot see that on my bike....DOH! So this could be the issue.

OK, so over the weekend a gave the little yellow beast an oil change and new filter, to my utter shock it came out like water, boy did the engine need that.

Also a couple of pics, not great ones but you can see what I am up to at least.

So you can see the baffle is fitted that came off my 1200 Bandit, which was lucky and saved me a packet come MOT day. (real bad pic sorry). It took quite a bit of rubbing down and hammering to get it in perfectly.

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_100810080.jpg

Removed most fairings to access the engine and work on that a little.

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_100810078.jpg

Removed the nose cone for a clean up and ready for the new screen and put the tank and carbs back on to try it out after the oil change. Kinda looks cool with no nose cone. Very Happy

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_100810079.jpg

Took the brakes off and overhauled them and started to rub them down, then got bored of lots of rubbing, so went to buy some paint stripper and back to black at Halfrauds. Currently picking a colour to paint them. Not sure yet.

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_100810081.jpg

Currently waiting for a part off ebay to surface, which is the little lever for the choke cable to attach to.

Currently starting the bike by pulling the choke by the carb plungers.

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_100810076.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_100810075.jpg

Still got the wheels to take off overhaul and paint. Also, need new HT leads as number one cylinder does not fire. Confused

More to come. Cool

Oh and here is a little picture of when I picked it up if your interested;

nice bike, ive got a nc24 project myself - one thing i would suggest that you give the collector box a good once over.

Mine went and needed the engine out to remove the whole system - real pain.

oh an get rid of the monster micron - ive also removed pillion pegs and looks far better.

I quite like the Micron, makes it sound cool, the collector box is pretty solid, no major rust or corrosion as far as I can see.

I will take the rear pegs off and see what it looks like, might be better. Thanks for the advice though.

Actually, could you do me a little favor, the lever the choke connects to, can you take a pic of it and where it connects to the carbs please?

I got a cable and the lever on it's way, as the bike came without them I cant see where the choke lever fits on to. And as you know there is no manual to hand so it is all on peoples knowledge if you need help.

I've found some links to nc24 bikes here, if you want. I didn't bother checking the list in the workshop section, so apologies if this is reposted information...

Thanks Cormac/nowhere.elysium

That's really helpful, I think....I THINK I have almost cracked it, will see when I get the missing part, I really don't get why this was missing, not exactly something that will fall off. Weird!

Will wait to see that pic, should be interesting to see where it goes.

Thumbs Up

It is a dark smoked screen, similar to the original one, but you can just about see through it.

Once I make some good progress on it, I will stick some more pics up.

Right, I've been a busy boy over the last few weeks.

Bike has been stripped of all bits needed doing, I only had one jack, so the careful use of the garden project put into use.

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210157.jpg

As the painting of the fairings will put the project way over my budget. I decided to repair most of the paintwork myself as much as I can, using a heat gun and a rag to polish out all the bubbles in the paintwork, there was a huge bubble in the tank, forgot to get a before shot but here is the after shot, you can only just see it, so it's not bad. Took the old tatty tank pad off and polished the tank ready to go back on the bike, then pop the new one on I got free with the screen, got to love free stuff.

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210151.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210152.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210153.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210156.jpg

Then the left and right fairings (front and rear), both had bubbles and cracks all over the place, so once again got the heat gun out and ironed them out as much as I could, obviously I could not get the cracks out, but I certainly reset the paint(if that's the expression) onto the plastics as much I could so the problem does not multiply..

Thought this was not enough, so I bought some primer, yellow and black paint and some lacquer to finish the job;

[pics of painted fairings]
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210112.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210113.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210154.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210155.jpg

This horrible plate is what keeps the two lower fairings together Sick Got a little trick here, but not finished it yet! Very Happy
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210150.jpg
https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/2009_110210158.jpg

I have way more to do on the fairings so will put them aside to set properly and need to get some not so abrasive polish. As I polished it with some stuff I had and it took the paint off again. Very frustrating. Twisted Evil

So them aside, I turned to the hangers for polishing and painting. A great result here, will finish the pics tomorrow. More on this soon. Razz

Picked up a new set of carbs with the correct parts for the choke cable, HT leads and a fuel breather cap. Will fit all these tomorrow as well and hopefully get the engine running tip top.

https://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/Neileng/carbs.jpg

So that's about half of what I have been up to so far, just got to picture everything and splash it up here.
