Lutheranism, one of the major branches of Western Christianity, is based on the teachings of the famous German reformer of 16th century, Martin Luther. Lutheranism follows the doctrine "by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone” which is in contradiction with the Roman view. Majority of the documents written by Lutheran believers are in reaction to the papal abuses and ‘false’ teachings propagated by the Roman Catholic Church. Martin Luther, the founder of Lutheranism believed that a dedication to the church would not take away his sins, and hence hoped for a salvation by true faith in Jesus Christ alone.

So help me God, Amen.” He also believed that neither good deeds nor the ‘intercession’ of ‘sinful’ men would save him from the hell’s fire, and hence sought solace by believing in Christ and Christ only.


Lutheranism is one of the largest religious groups in countries like Denmark, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia etc… Organizations like Lutheran World Federation, the International Lutheran Council, and the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference also play a major role in promoting Lutheranism.
