Felt for the guy, we were stopped at a set of lights and when they changed we all began to pull off but then heard the sirens coming from the right, so me and the cars stopped as a fire engine quickly became visable, the guy on the scooter though got himself confused I guess or just panicked as he started popping wheelies and trying to stop at the same time!! he was all over the place. Well he came off as his wheel came down for about the 3rd time so I pulled over to the side and went and wheeled his scooter over to, no car drivers offered to help funny enough, anyway no visible damage apart from a small scrape but the guy was real shook up.
Sat him down, got him a coffee from the cafe down the road and sat with him for 10mins, he was dead nervous about getting back on so I offered to ride back to his house with him as it wasn't to far out of my way, which I did. Got there, he puts the scooter away and say's I was expecting to maybe come off but not on the day I picked my bike up Embarassed turns out he did cbt a month ago and had just bought and picked up his scooter today and been for a ride to get used to it before work on Monday. When he heard and seen the fire engine he just got in a state and lost control. He asked me if I'd go for a short ride with him tomorrow so he could follow and build up his confidence, a learner teaching a learner...loll, said I would any excuse to get out for a ride. Seems a nice guy and he's on two wheels, might suggest to him to find out about paying for another days lesson to polish up on what he learnt on his cbt or do you think he's better off just getting in the saddle and riding some quite roads to get used to the whole two wheels skill?

You did a really nice thing. If you weren't there he probably would of chucked the towel in. The cagers not getting out to help doesn't surprise me.

I don't think he needs lessons, I think if you take him out, calm him down a bit and he'll get the hang of it in no time.

Smile Thumbs Up

(That's the theory Laughing)

Well done on taking so much time out to help a fellow learner in need. Thumbs Up
Sounds like he just needs to get his confidence up, i think if i'd left it a month before getting my first bike after CBT i'd have been nervous too.
Point him in the direction of somewhere quiet where he can practice his low speed control and get a feel for the bike, i'd only suggest more tuition if he really had no idea on control after a couple of hours quiet practice.

Cagers rarely get out and help,
some years ago I came off on a country road (on the corner as you come out of East claydon village heading towards winslow in bucks) and my bike although not badly damaged was lying on its side in the middle of the road blocking traffic coming from either direction.
The bike was fairly heavy and I had hurt my hand and ankle so was unable to lift it. I tried to get it off the road but due to my injuries failed several times.
All the cars just waited looking really angry that I was in their way.
Not one person got out to ask me if I was OK or to offer to help me move my bike off the road.
I eventually struggled on and managed to move the bike out of the carriageway and the cars just went on their way. The driver neatest me was huffing and puffing at the inconvenience he had been caused as he drove past.

Well took him out today and as suggested went to a car park, actually the one where I did my cbt as its empty on a week end and most the time the cones are left there so its ideal. Had a bit of fun with the slow control and sussed his problem straight away, basically he's very heavy handed on the throttle, pulling away on really high revs and shifting his weight towards the back. I got the impression he felt he had to get away quick every time to be safe, so got him to follow me round the carpark at nice slow and steady speeds practising slow pull ups and pull aways till he got to grips with it. Then I took him for a little jaunt up the A12 which has plenty of stop start with him following me to see that you dont need to tear away from stationary to claim your piece of road.
Got back to his house after about an hour & half and he seems more relaxed now and not screaming the nuts off his bike.
No first kiss to report I'm afraid as his wife said to come back tomorrow after 8am when he's left for work.

Car drivers are a selfish shower of shit who will happily leave a motorcyclist bleeding to death in the road before getting off their fat, lazy arses to help (in 99% of cases). Then again, if I saw someone who had crashed their tin box, I would probably ignore them, having seen the complete disregard those buggers show for people on two wheels.

This fella on the scooter really shouldn't be on the road if he's that easily spooked. What will he do if some blind lorry driver starts careering towards him Shocked

We've all got to start somewhere. Dunno how he got through his CBT if he was that bad. I didn't. He's best just practicing at quiet times on his own or with some sensible mates. I wouldn't go into the melee that is the city rush hour if I was him, especially now it's Winter and dark in the morning and evening. That's just a recipe for getting knocked off.

I'd say wait till all the night traffic dies down later at night and go for a plodabout somewhere quiet. Or quiet Sunday mornings are best, before anyone else is awake. Practice down a local industrial estate. Once he's got his confidence built up then try the morning meatgrinder on the way to work.

Karma Thumbs Up

When i came off under L plates on my tdr ( driver pulled out of a side street and i ditched the bike) no one came to help me and there was tailback for miles!

All i remember seeing was a car bumper almost above my head and my bike facing me on the other side of the road.

A van driver came from wayyy back down the tailback of cars to help me ( a biker himself Rolling Eyes ) and used some strong blue language at the car parked almost on my head Laughing

2nd time i came off on a patch of diesel though, lots of cars stopped to help me. One woman phoned the services, 2 guys moved my bike and another bloke was making sure i was ok Thumbs Up

Kudos to the OP, but this just goes to show that the CBT really is a bit lacking for a complete novice. I remember when I did mine, I dropped my bike on the way back in to the centre (the only time I've ever dropped) and they still let me pass.

Being a naturally cautious type, I spent a couple of days riding around the car park at the local sports centre before letting myself loose on the roads; however, I know some people will just assume that they've done their CBT so they're ready.

Like when I took my first spill.

Slid off on a patch of oil and went careering into the car in front. Rush hour, I was on my way to work. I was unconscious and no one came to help, tailback for miles, so much that it was on the radio. Laughing

"Motorcycle accident on the A4130, queues up to 1 mile towards Didcot."

A biker came over and stopped, helped me get the bike to the side of the road and call an ambulance (considering the girl didn't get out of her car till the police had to interview her, by which time I was being rushed to hospital) etc...

Always had a negative prejudice against cagers.

CBT standard is fairly poor. When I did mine a guy that came out on the road at the same time as me with the instructor kept going the wrong way, then got really confused and went through a red light while me and the instructor were stopped at the white line, the instructor was shaking his head as the guy ran the gauntlet of vehicles that had right of way. The guy still passed at the end of the day though.
