Best 2 weeks of my life......
I tried my hardest to get on a long running case, but was unlucky. Did get 2 nice cases though and got a guy put down for killing a biker through DD
It can be very boring if you are not on a case. Suggest taking a good book or a games machine.
Odds on you will come off it having enjoyed it. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

I had the pleasure two summers ago. In summary the highlights are as follows:
Turn up on the first Monday. Sit around for an hour or so and wait for everyone else to turn up. Get a brief introduction and explanation of what is expected of you.
Tea break.
Return to court to be told you're not wanted for the day.
Go home.
Get call that afternoon saying you're not wanted on Tuesday.
Turn up on Wednesday. Wait around for an hour or so.
Get told the defendant pleaded guilty and get sent home.
Thursday - Get sent into a case and hear about one side of the case.
Friday. Second half of case in morning. Dury part of it in the afternoon.
Monday is a new case.
Tuesday second half of case.
Weds is Jury part.
Thurs & Friday not required.
They have two sets of jury's who work two week shifts (overlapping) and they don't like to over-run the cases / shifts (three weeks) as you get bonus payments for extended duty. For this reason you won't get put on a new case in the second part of the second week.
You'll be amazed at the amount of time & money is wasted in the court service and how little use is made of the facility.
You'll make a mint from being paid to drive there / park / lunch allowance.
You'll meet a good cross section of society and see some characters (in the jury AND the dock).
If you're a sensitive soul it may upset you. I just had a street beating in Milton Keynes for some guy of shagged this other guy's sister. I also had two drunks beating up a mentally handicapped guy in milton keynes.
The worst part is being forced to walk past the defendant's family / friends outside the court.
Oh, and the other other shocking part is how poor the CPS is. They couldn't build a case for shit and have holes all over their evidence. I hope i never have to rely on them for my prosecution in a case. . . . ____________________ "because one stroke isnt enough and four strokes waste two" |

Define 'harmed'. Do you mean physically? Emotionally? Financially? There are many levels of 'harming' - where is your line of demarkation?
By the way Warped, I've done jury duty - I enjoyed it and would do it again, made a few bob too. Just turn up and let them lead the show, you only have the one job to do, everything else is sorted for you. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I think to myself, "Is there somebody, somewhere, sitting and feeling unhappy, sad, miserable, crying..." If the answer is no, the verdict is not guilty. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

Do it, it's quite enjoyable. I'm still waiting to get called again after 26 years. Wish they'd hurry up.
I did it one day after my 18th birthday, leather jacket/long hair jeans/crash helmet etc, convinced I'd be thrown off any jury (in those days the defence could object to 6 jurors without giving a reason). Turned out I was completely wrong, defence counsel loved me, they chucked off anyone middle aged with a suit.
I only did a week, was released for the second week. I was given a cheque for a weeks money without any deduction for tax. I cashed it and stayed off work the second week. I think they are a bit more careful paying you properly nowadays. I was paid for my normal hours plus whatever overtime my firm said I did normally.
I was a juror on three trials, a going equipped, a drug possesion and a shoplifting.
The drug possession was quite good, got to see a policeman nearly burst into tears under cross examination.
The 'going equipped' was hilarious, the feeble excuses for carrying two enormous screwdrivers, a torch, a pair of gloves and 15 car keys at 3am had to be heard to be believed. The reason given for the gloves was that the accused had been bodypopping in Stratford town centre 15 hours earlier. The judge (wig, half moon glasses and cobwebs) asked what bodypopping was, 'it's a form of robotic dance your honour' came the reply. 'Really? whatever next?' he uttered with dust falling out of his wig as he shook his head. ____________________ Blackmail is a nasty word........but not as nasty as phlegm!

People cause harm, not drugs and guns. People. Gonna ban cars next? Kitchen knives? Bungee-jumping? Butter? Alcohol? Tobacco? Sugar?
Go on, rationalise ban-culture preventionism and explain to me where the line gets drawn, and why that line is different in different countries and different cultures. Make any sense of why it's ok to fvck a girl of thirteen in Spain or fourteen in Austria and why that makes you a paedo in the UK, or why it's ok to fvck a girl of sixteen here but in some states in the USA you'll go down for statutory rape if she's under eighteen. Or why it's ok to own and use a machine-gun in some countries but if you get caught here with a bolt-action .22 rimfire hunting rabbits you'll be locked in a prison for years.
On second thoughts, don't bother. Because all it ends up as is different bunches of arrogant self-serving scum in different places getting off in their own peculiar ways with thinking they get to tell their fellow adults what they can and can't do, as the fancy takes them. Not because it makes sense, or is righteous, but because it validates and justifies the jobs and positions and power they've given to themselves, as an end to itself.
Fvck them, they can go rot in hell. And meanwhile a free person such as myself will do whatever the hell he likes, so long as it causes no harm to another. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

I did it and I would agree with a lot of the above, it is:
a) boring
b) scary how crap duty CPS solicitors are
c) Frustrating
I had only one case that reached it's conclusion and it was for a bunch of girls breaking into another girl's house and trashing it. The only reason it got to court, I believe, was because the little troglodyte who was accused had been done numerous times before and they wanted to get her for something. We found her guilty because of the law where if an agreement is made to commit a crime, then all parties are guilty of that crime. At one point the CPS was having an argument with this illiterate (couldn't read her own statement) 16 year old like so:
CPS: I put it to you that you did it
Trog: I never
CPS: Well, I put it to you that you did
Trog: I never
CPS: well I put it to you ..... etc etc
Well done mate, 7 years legal training put to good use there. Putting 'I put it to you' before every sentence does not change the fact that you are arguing with a 16 year old illiterate, and losing!
Another case that was looking interesting was a couple who met in a mental home and then were released and lived together. If the evidence the woman gave was true then he was a violent nutter. Unfortunately, she kept giving evidence on events that were not covered by the case, so the jury was dismissed in case we had been misled.
All in all interesting but scary when you remember that a court case costs c. £20k a day.
Cheers
