Hi

Anyone else notice this:-

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/06/21/ncar21.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/06/21/ixnewstop.html

Report has been published showing that trains are less fuel efficient than cars.

Come on then government, stop wasting money on trains and repair the roads.

All the best

Keith

I think trains are only less fuel efficient as few people use them. i am sure a train with 1000 people aboard will transport them more efficiently than 1000 cars. however trains are not used to anything like the amount required for them to be the most efficient.

link not working

but most mainline trains are electric, presumably using very clean electricity produced from natural gas ??

however, I completely agree with the sentiment

fuck the tree huggers, let's have loads more roads

I demand roads like America

where 12 lane highways are the norm

and 12 lane congestion as well, but hey - some you win Wink

In Reply to the electric arguement, in the South West we don't have any electric lines at all, every train runs on diesel. Smile

The electrical trains use huge amounts of electricity. Electricity doesn't travel all that well done wires, or tracks.
All trains are hugely inefficient. The only thing I find mildy amusing is that down here we have a brand new diesel train on one of the lines. Its the best of the bunch, the electric ones are shit.

How do trains stack up against buses for efficiency? Would it be a better idea to rip up the tracks and melt them down, tarmac where they used to be, and run buses on those roads. Maybe even let bikes on them.

the trouble is that you can't go VERY fast for very long

mine does about 50 miles to a full tank flat out

you would need LOTS of filling stations en route Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Hi

Link still works for me (used it on both IE and Opera).

Couple of quotes:-

"They calculate that expresses between London and Edinburgh consume slightly more fuel per seat (the equivalent of 11.5 litres) than a modern diesel-powered car making the same journey."

"Tilting Pendolino trains, due to come into full operation between London and Manchester in the autumn, are reckoned to weigh more per seat than the forthcoming Airbus A380 double-decker."

From the graph in the article it suggests that a 50% loaded high speed (215mph) train is about as efficient as a 25% loaded car. Sure the train gets there quicker, but how often do you want to go from one train station to another.

All the best

Keith
